Yeah, It’s Like Spiderman

Wild day lilies, covering the roadsides in West Virginia right now….

Conversation with 16 about Secrets Rising:

16: “So what is your book about again?”

Me: “Well, there’s this town, and weird stuff happens.” (This is how I wanted to propose it to my editor, but she wanted more details. Odd.)

16: “Why does the weird stuff happen?”

Me: “There was this electric storm, rain and lightning–”

16: “So people were struck by lightning and got superpowers?”

Me: “No, they don’t have superpowers. Supernatural stuff HAPPENS.”

16: “Because of the storm?”

Me: “There was an earthquake DURING the electric storm and it created the perfect combination of atmospheric conditions and pressure. There were these positive ions that were released–”

16: “Do you even know what positive ions are?”

Me: “That is not the point.”

16: “Peter Parker got bitten by an arachnid. That’s why he got powers. I guess that makes as much sense.”

Me: “Exactly.”

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
