Wild, Wonderful

West Virginia’s Capitol Building in Charleston, viewed here from across the Kanawha River.

Today is State Day, West Virginia’s birthday, the day it (as my children like to say, ILLEGALLY) broke from Virginia and became a state during the Civil War. I was going to make a list of my favorite things about West Virginia, but then I remembered what a six-year-old who visited us at the farmhouse said recently when asked what her favorite thing was about West Virginia.

She said: “The people.”

Now if a place could get a better compliment than that, I don’t know what it is.

Happy Birthday, West Virginia.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
