In Like a Lion

Mar
3

It’s March! I can turn over my calendars for real without making Winter angry.

So why is Winter still angry as a lion? Why does the weather forecast here still include words like flurries and freezing? I don’t think Winter is a very nice person. NO! I take that BACK! Winter, you are wonderful, beautiful, positively splendiferous! I love you, Winter!

Whew.

We’re actually supposed to make it back into the 50s later this week, so I have high hopes for the rest of the month turning more lamb-like. How is the weather in your corner of the world? Back when I lived in Texas, I’d be planting my vegetable garden now.

Here, not so much, but it is time to get ready! Time to prepare your biodegradable seed-starter pots.

And whip up some handcrafted herb pot markers.

Also, as promised, March brings my first Chickens in the Road monthly newsletter. The newsletter will include sneak peeks of what’s coming up on the blog, reminders and handy links from the past month’s posts, and best of all, extras. What kind of extras? Every month, all sorts of good stuff goes by the wayside due to time and space constraints in my daily posts. Cute farm animal photos, recipes (even flops!), tips, and other fun stuff that just never make it onto the blog. I’ll be scooping it all up and putting the best of the best in the monthly newsletter. The first newsletter will go out this week!

If you’re a registered user here, you’re already subscribed to the newsletter. If you’re a registered user and you don’t want to be subscribed to the newsletter (hmmph!), you can unsubscribe when you receive your first newsletter–there will be a handy link in the newsletter to remove yourself from the mailing list.

If you aren’t a registered user, you can still subscribe by using the newsletter subscription link in the sidebar to your right (just above the Slanted Little House photo). Or go here to register and subscribe yourself to the mailing list at the same time by checking the “subscribe to mailing list” box when you register. (Why not do both? It’s free!)

Once you’re registered, you can also post on the forum. We have over 500 members on the forum! Come join in the fun.

If you register and don’t receive your password in email (for some people, this is a problem) and you don’t find it by checking your spam folder, click the Contact button in the menu above and I’ll help you. (Even if it’s been a while back since you registered or if you got it and simply forgot it, I can fix it for you! Just let me know!)

Also, if you want your own gravatar (that’s the little image that appears by your comments on the blog and by your posts on the forum–go here to get your own gravatar. This is very easy, I promise! You don’t even have to know how to resize your photo. The gravatar site will resize it for you.

I switched to a dedicated server recently in an effort to handle traffic that can cause my site to run slowly and sometimes even go down completely. This is a very large website with a lot of traffic. Between hosting and technical assistance, expenses to maintain this site now run approximately $400 per month. Please help me if you can. You can make a one-time donation or, if you would, please consider a monthly subscription donation. See how to donate here.

You can also advertise.

Thank you, always, for being here and for your comments and support! Here’s to a fabulous, stunning, splendid March!

Oh, and if you’re out plowing your garden? Be sure you don’t do anything ridiculous like this.

I probably shouldn’t hoe, either.

Spring, oh lovely Spring, why doth thou come bearing a HOE?!

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
