Number Nine & Company

Be honest. You would have taken this kitten home, too.

Even if you already had eight cats.

And six sheep, two goats (and a third on the way), two ducks (did I say two?), and 40-something chickens.

Did I say 40-something chickens? I’ll explain.

Oh, and by the way, there is something else coming.

I can’t tell you what that something else is.

It’s a surprise.

Kinda like Number Nine.

He was a surprise even to me.

He’s pretty cute.

Even when he’s crying.

And he cries a lot.

But mostly he’s just adorable.

Morgan grabbed him while at my cousin’s farm the other day, just before she got on the school bus. He’s from a new litter from one of their feral barn cats. We’ve taken in one of the feral barn kittens before. (We still have Killer. He’s a giant cat now!) This kitten is no more than two to three weeks old. Too young to realize yet that humans are “bad” so she was able to pick him up. She talked Georgia into keeping him for her for the day and after school I couldn’t say no.

And so….

….I present Number Nine! (He awaits a name based on his personality, or so I’ve been told. Me, I’m calling him Number Nine.) We’re feeding him cat milk with a dropper and he also will lick at a little bit of soft cat food mixed with cat milk.

Good thing I love cats.

Oh, and I love chickens, too.

The older chicks made their debut in the chicken yard last night.

We already have 20 new chicks in the brooder. (It didn’t stay empty for long!)

Buff Orpingtons, Silver-Laced Wyandottes, Barred Rocks, and Americaunas.

And….

….six new Pekin ducklings.

It’s spring on the farm!

And don’t forget the something else. Shhhhh. It’s a surprise! (Wanna make a guess?)

Happy Birthday to Weston! He turned 16 yesterday. We had hamburgers on homemade buns with my most favorite cake in the world, Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cake!

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
