Farmers Market

May
3

I’m stopping in at our little town farmers market today to see if I can sell anything. My cousin will be there selling his cornmeal and other things. He convinced me to go, too. I’ll be selling candles, preserves, eggs, breads, maybe pies, we’ll see. I’m not taking much today–we can’t stay long before we have to head to master gardener class #9. (Ten classes in all, which means I’ll be done next week!)

Tart and Sweet

May
3

Today’s BBB giveaway is another copy of Tart and Sweet: 101 Canning and Pickling Recipes for the Modern Kitchen by Kelly Geary and Jessie Knadler. One of the things I love about this book, aside from the creative recipes and gorgeous photos, is that it’s arranged seasonally, which makes it easy to browse ideas that are available to you now-now-now from your garden or the farmers market. Spring means Strawberry Orange Compote or Pickled Asapargus–or maybe some Sweet Apple Cider Baby Beets? Many of the canning recipes are accompanied by further recipes to use what you’ve made, which is handy and mouthwatering. I want to make Strawberry Orange Compote just so I can make the milkshake. The salad recipes makes me want to can the Sweet Apple Cider Baby Beets because it actually makes beets sound good. I’m not a huge beets fan, but the photo of the salad looks delicious.

Do you need this book today? Let me know!

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
