An Udder Mystery

I wonder and wait and observe her udder for signs of impending maternity. Is she or isn’t she?

She’s been putting on weight. I took this comparison shot of Clover and Nutmeg a month ago. (Clover on the left, Nutmeg on the right.)

I took this picture yesterday. (This time Rotunda aka Nutmeg on the left, Clover on the right.)

She’s as big as Rotunda now!!!

Nutmeg looks like she’s got basketballs in there. But she’s really just a normal goat. Look at Pepsi. He’s got basketballs, too.

But Clover’s the only one who might be pregnant, and she just recently took on the basketball look most goats sport as a matter of routine. If she’s pregnant, she’d be due by the first week of August. If nothing happens by then, we’ll know it’s just the gingerbread. And if that’s the case, I’ll still be happy. I was worried about her weight.

A couple months ago, I took her to this old country vet and told him I thought she was too skinny. He said she looked all right. Like people, some goats are naturally more slender. I said, “But she’s too skinny! I’m worried about her! I love her!” He smacked me out of his office. Last week, I took Coco to see him. I said, “Do you remember me? I brought my goat to see you a couple months ago.” He said, “No.” I said, “YOU DON’T REMEMBER MY BEAUTIFUL GOAT?”

How could someone forget that face??? :happyflower:

  2. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

Our pygmies are due the second week of September and I am so excited! I hope Clover surprises you with a little one(s).

  3. CindyP says:

I think it’s time Clover found a new doc with a better memory. Who could forget her??? It would be so wonderful if we were all surprised with some bouncing Clovers!! :clover:

  4. Lisa says:

I was watching Unwrapped last night and they were doing a feature on making goat’s milk cheese. A woman opened a door to a ramp of goats who came rushing into the milking parlor where milk machines were attached and they were milked. When I saw those goats rush into the parlor my first thought was, ‘Why does Clover fight this so?’.

  5. Diane says:

She is pretty. I think you need a new vet. lol. She looks like she could be having babies. Cant wait to hear if she does next month.

  6. Lynda Dunham-Watkins says:

Reminds me of when I go to the doctor! Clover and I have something in common, our doctors don’t remember us! ARG

  7. BuckeyeGirl says:

Some of those old fellows will act all gruff and deny such things as having fallen in love with the soulful gaze of a goat like Clover. Doesn’t make him a bad vet, just a bit of an old goat himself! 😆 Sometimes it’s hard to find a vet who will treat goats, so if he’s good and you trust his treatment, forgive his alleged memory lapses!

  8. trish says:

Ah Clover don’t you worry. We remember you and that’s all that matters. Send some of that gingerbread my way!!!

  9. Suzanne McMinn says:

I actually love the vet! He’s like 80 years old. I don’t know if he’s hilarious or scary.

  10. monica says:

    Is she craving anything?
Goats are funny! They always act like they are starving, but as soon as you feed them–they blimp up and then it goes back to normal again in a few hours. I wish I could do that. . . Imagine it: Jealous of a goat!

  11. Susan says:

Have you looked at her rear end?? 😕 We used to raise nubian goats and Border Leicester sheep. I could almost always tell they were bred by looking at the vulva….It elongates and starts to show a little pink. Every spring I would do my ‘Rear End Checks’ and I could tell who was bred and who wasn’t. If she passes a glob of bloody mucus that is a good sign she is close to delivering! :happyfeet:

  12. Doris Lindsey says:

😕 I’m no goat expert, but she looks PG to me.Like you said, you will have to wait and see.If se is due in Aug.? you sholld be able to see or feel movement in her belly or on her sides.I think she just wants to surprise you. Good luck! Doris

  13. Sheryl (Runningtrails) says:

Oh I hope she is pregnant! That’s so exciting! New, tiny little goat babies! (I am so jealous!)

  14. Holly says:

ummm…so many animals and many of them came free because there simply are too many. Maybe spay/neuter and responsible animal husbandry should be more a topic of the conversations on this site. They are so cute but will overbreed unless the humans act.

    • Suzanne says:

Thanks–I’m a huge proponent of spaying and neutering. I’ve mentioned many times that I spay/neuter all of my pets (cats and dogs, other than Coco, who is a livestock guardian dog and part of our livestock). As for the goats etc, this is a farm–we breed our livestock for sale.

  15. Estella says:

Maybe Clover needs to give the vet some of her gingerbread or a cookie. Bet he’d remember her then!

  16. Jenn says:

Human preggo tests work for critters, too. They test the same hormone present in pregnant females. If you really, really need to know NOW, get a preg test and wait for Clover to pee. You’ll know in about a minute

  17. monica says:

OMG! We have chicken eggs!! :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry:

    • BuckeyeGirl says:

:snoopy: Congrats! That’s GREAT! I love gathering eggs, it feels like “I” accomplished something, when it was really the ladies doing all the work.

  18. Katharina says:

She has either matured to “basketball” size or she has matured to “mama” size. I look forward to the rest of the story. I know which I am hoping for.
