Look who’s here!
2
He was unloaded here on Saturday.
1
He’s a year-old polled Hereford bull. And he’s ours, as in really ours, as in no more hassles with finding bulls to borrow! He lives here. He doesn’t have horns, which I like, and Hereford cows are famous for their docile temperaments, which I also like. Not that you can take that for granted. I’ll be careful around the bull, but if we’re going to have a bull, I’m happy to have Hereford.
3
He met the girls first thing, and everybody sniffed everybody.
4
Twice, the girls went through a gate into another field and he got lost because he turned his head for a minute and didn’t know how they got into the other field!
5
Silly boy, he needs to pay attention!
6
Then he did a whole perimeter check on the fields, as if figuring out his territory, or at least making sure he knew where the gates were so he didn’t lose his girls again.
8
The girls are all bred, due to calve in April, so he doesn’t have anything to do right now but hang out and get to know everybody. Blossom, the other milk cow, and another cow–a full-on beef girl–will be coming soon, so he will have plenty to do then.

Meanwhile, I’m very excited! WE HAVE A BULL–of our own. This has been a long time coming.

This should make life on the farm so much easier. Have you considered where to keep him so he won’t breed the girls when you don’t want them bred? When we let a bull run with our milk cows, I never see them bred so it is a guessing game as to calving dates.

aww, future babies will all have white or white on their faces!! So cute. Nothing sweeter than a hereford calf.

  3. bayvistafarm says:

lol..I meant all white faces… or some white on them.

Hooray! Maybe you should call him Steady Eddie 😉

I remember when you brought home BP, and now you’ve got your own herd!

Your new bull looks just like the steer I raised in 4-H. My great-uncle was the leader for our group. He’s been raising cattle forever… and currently enjoying the grass-fed movement.

WOW, no bull!! Yes bull, what a wonderful addition to your farm and herd, soon the babies will be here, things are moving along. I am happy for, your farm and farming skills have grown by leaps and bounds.

Does he have a name yet? Do we get to help name him? He’s a very handsome young Hereford. I’ve loved them ever since seeing the movie about the cattle in Texas in the 60s. Couldn’t tell you the name but it was probably a John Wayne movie, because he was the main star in my Dad’s western movie watching. Anyway, I love them. But all your girls are pretty too. You’ll have quite a herd when all the new additions come and calves are born. Congratulations on another milestone for your family farm.

He is a handsome fellow, and he does need a name! :cowsleep:

(Please have Joell share that recipe on Farm Bell! :happyflower: )

Okay, he is adorable. He looks so small! Just a year old, he is just a wittle baby! Will he get bigger? I know so little about…little..cows LOL!

  10. The High Altitude Tea Duchess says:

Is he tall enough to ‘do the deed’?

    • Suzanne McMinn says:

He is tall enough, lol. He’s not finished growing! He’s a young bull, only a year old. He will be two or more before he reaches his mature size, but even now, he could do the deed if called upon. The girls are bred, due to calve in April, so he won’t need to test his skills for a while yet.
