Double Chocolate Snowball Cookies

Are you baking? It’s cookie time! There is no holiday more demanding of cookies than Christmas. I try to keep my cookie jar filled all month with one holiday treat after another. Snowball cookies are a classic. This one is a little twist with chocolate–and a surprise inside.

How to make Double Chocolate Snowball Cookies:

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup cocoa
1 cup nuts, crushed or chopped
semi-sweet chocolate chips
powdered sugar for rolling

Cream the butter, sugar, and vanilla. Stir in the flour, cocoa, and nuts.

Use a sturdy spoon to combine the mixture. It’s a heavy cookie dough.

Divide the dough in half and wrap the two balls of dough in plastic. Chill one hour. Scoop off spoonfuls of chilled cookie dough. Flatten into a circle then drop three chocolate chips inside.

Shape into balls, tucking the chocolate chips inside. Place on ungreased cookie sheets and bake at 350-degrees for 20 minutes.

While still warm, roll in powdered sugar. Eat in copious amounts.

*Makes about 3 dozen cookies. Recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.

What are your favorite holiday cookies? What’s in your cookie jar right now? We’d love to see your goodies at Farm Bell Recipes. Please share!

P.S. You can make lemon, orange, rum, etc, snowball cookies by using those extracts instead of vanilla. To make classic snowball cookies instead of chocolate, replace the 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup cocoa with 2 cups all-purpose flour. Snowball cookies are vegan if you use margarine, by the way! (Read labels carefully, though. Not all chocolate chips–or margarines!–are vegan.) If you don’t like nuts, it’s okay to leave the nuts out.

Oh, man, does that sound good! I’d add some cinnamon and maybe a little bit of cayenne to make them Mexican. Love Mexican hot chocolate! Too bad I have to be out all day, my oven is calling!

  2. CindyP says:

Oooo, I like the chocolate chips on the inside!

These are going on the Christmas cookie list, Thank You!

  3. Rachel says:

I make something similar called a chocolate crinkle, though they are just a plain (but delicious!) chocolate cookie rolled in powdered sugar. I’ll have to put the recipe up on Farm Bell sometime. I make those and snickerdoodles every year for Christmas, along with whatever tickles my fancy, but the chocolate crinkles and snickerdoodles are the must-haves.

Suzanne, that looks like powdered sugar in the first picture…do you use powdered or regular sugar in the recipe?

    Looks yummy!

  5. Marlena says:

Snowballs are on my list to make. Seeing this though…woah! I’m off work this morning and I’m going to make them right now. I LOVE snowballs so this could become a favorite!

  6. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

Not really a cookie but I LOVE Oreo balls. Chop a package of double stuffed Oreos in your food processor, mix with one package of cream cheese. Dip in melted Almond bark (or chips with paraffin) and chill. I eat WAY too many of these!

  7. folkwoman says:

Do you think this would work if I leave the nuts out? My son is allergic…

  8. Ramona says:

Looks good, but they are great!

  9. Connie R says:

Can a regular mixer be used or do they need to be mixed by hand?

  10. Sheila says:

Right now I have triple chip cookies in my jar (chocolate chips , peanut butter chips and butterscotch chips) makes a tasty cookie :D.

  11. Johanna says:

OK, I dropped everything this morning and made a half batch, adding cinnamon to make them more Mexican. I took one with me for my friend at lunch. She pronounced it amazing. This recipe is definitely a keeper!!!

  12. patrice says:

My friend makes something very similar to this and she puts malted chocolate in it so it tastes like a malted milk shake. They’re great.

  13. patrice says:

You said you like to keep your cookie jar filled all month. Are you having as much trouble doing that as I am? My cookie jar must have a hole in the bottom!

  14. cricketjett says:

I have macaroon cookies, peanut butter cookies, and chocolate chip cookies right now. But this cookie is my next one to make! I am a chocolate crazed person. Anything chocolate makes me happy. The chocolate chip center is to die for and the powdered sugar is the best treat. Thanks Suzanne, for a dream come true recipe!

  15. Charley says:

I made these a little bigger and instead of the chocolate chips, I added a rolo candy 🙂 The caramel melted inside and was a really nice center when they were still a bit warm. Happy baking!

  16. Donna Davis says:

Can’t wait to try these!! Yum!

  17. Steph says:

This is a great cookie recipe! My husband is begging me to make them again. I didn’t have nuts, so I threw in a cup of chocolate chips. What a yummy chocolate rush! Thank you 🙂
