Farmstead Egg Guide & Cookbook

Mar
19

A few weeks ago, I received this beautiful little book in the mail and was invited to participate in Terry Golson’s blog tour. I actually already had the original, The Farmstead Egg Cookbook, that was published in 2006 and had made a number of the recipes. I got the book soon after I got chickens. This new book is expanded with two sections, how to raise chickens along with the recipes for how to use all of those eggs.
Farmstead Egg Guide jacket
The Farmstead Egg Guide & Cookbook is an excellent resource whether you’re just starting out with chickens or you’ve had them for awhile, like I have. I think it was a great idea to include, all in one, everything you need to know about keeping chickens along with recipes. I love photos with recipes, and the book includes full-color pictures of many of them. Anyone who has had chickens knows that while waiting for the first egg seems to take forever, once they start laying, suddenly you’re desperate for creative and different ideas to use them. You’ll find a hundred of them in this book! I have a lot of cookbooks, but this is one I’m planning to keep in my kitchen, which means I’m going to use it. And even if you don’t have chickens, the recipes are delicious. (I actually had lost the original book when I moved, so I was happy to get another one!)

I’ve had chickens since spring, 2010. They have changed my life. They give so much more than just eggs and they do that quite often. I get their fantastic composted chicken manure for my gardens and fruits. Getting rid of leftover food is a snap and they do such a good job of turning it into fertilizer! Such a treat to just watch their comical ways and to learn when they’re upset or when they are happy.

Like many of you, I enjoy cookbooks. I have a battered copy of “Woman’s World” Edition of the American Woman’s Cook Book. It’s copyright is 1939, with portions included of previous works from 1928 and 1929. It is a very thorough cook book in that it teaches a young woman how to cook, set up her kitchen, supply her pantry, Menu making, packing school lunches, table setting and service, and best of all, carving and garnishing. I love the pictures of slender women dressed in pretty dresses, heels, stockings of course, pearls and a spotless apron. It has captions such as “Time and your oven await the occasion and the man” (By Hotpoint)and “Strike up a warm acquaintance with your oven and its special temperament.” I hate to think of the shock they would have to see me cooking in worn jeans, a baggy tee shirt and sneakers. ๐Ÿ™‚
