Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

I’m making my lists and checking them twice. Chopping onions and celery, baking Grandmother Bread and cornbread.


The dressing is coming, the dressing is coming!

The turkey is thawing in the refrigerator.

Pie dough is chilling. Pies are coming, pies are coming!

Small pumpkins are being carved out for candle holders for the table. Homemade whole berry cranberry sauce is chilling. Thanksgiving is coming, Thanksgiving is coming!

It’s time for cleaning and cooking, decorating and primping.

We will be having turkey, cornbread dressing, cranberry sauce, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans (home-canned), scalloped corn (fresh-frozen from the farmers market), cornmeal yeast rolls, and pies and cookies, oh my!

I haven’t absolutely decided yet which cookies and pies I’m baking.

I cooked a big pork butt this week to make dinners easy while I’m focused on the feast. Rolls for sandwiches one night. Fajitas with homemade tortillas another night. Pizza the next. It leaves me free to play with Thanksgiving.

I like to get as much of the prep work done early as I can. I will fix the cornbread dressing today and put it in the fridge (unbaked). Wednesday I’ll even fix the mashed potatoes in advance and put them in a crock pot to be heated up on Thursday. I’ll bake pies and cookies today and tomorrow. I want the actual day to be relaxed and fun!

I love fun.

And now I am going to break my own rule and actually acknowledge something said about me on another site. Which I never do. However, I thought this was so hilarious, and appropo to this post, I couldn’t resist sharing it with you.

From the comments on another site: “Look out for chicken lady because she is only other candidate that is not painfully annoying, however, I have a sneaking suspicion that she has a full time staff like Martha Stewart.”

    I’d take that as a compliment…”nobody could possibly get all that work done without help!” Actually, in the heirarcy you’re the staff and all the animals are holding out for management. They’re vying for jobs as CEO, Board of Directors, etc. You know, all the jobs where you actually don’t have to do all the manual labor. You’re doing a nice job “Chicken :chicken: Lady!” :heart:

    Yep! The turkey has been cooked, gravy made and oyster dressing done [love me some oyster dressing] all frozen. Cranberry relish is in the fridge. All the sides [with exception of the mashed taters] will be done on Wednesday evening and cooked on Thursday.

    This is the first year I did this but I had to because the beloved ILs are going out of town and requested gravy, the relish, dressing and my yeast rolls to take with them. I don’t think the trust my SILs cooking. :) So bonus – half our meal is done. Woohoo!

    i’m always soooo impressed by the amount of stuff you get through, i know how easy it is to get distracted on a farm.

    if you’re anything like me , on the way to let the chickens out you see a fallen branch that would make good kindling so have to collect it, then there is the wood pile to sort which is next to house and oh my, some tiles have blown down,and oh yes, those chickens are still waiting…………

    I’m using a few of those recipes myself!!! Hunh….actually all of them, and a few more!! Gotta have asparagus casserole (just like green bean, but swapping for asparagus!) using homemade cream of mushroom soup!

    I wish my family allowed me to host Thanksgiving, but since I’m a vegetarian they refuse! The best thing about the holiday meal is all the side dishes!! What are they thinking??!! Oh, well.

    I hope everyone remembers what they are most thankful for and honors the spirit of the holiday.

    Ugh. I did NOT like the vote tally this morning. :hissyfit:

    One of the things that dawned on me while looking over some of the competitor’s blogs is that you have such useful content! We learn things and have new recipes to try on top of having good clean fun from your sense of humor that underlies your less serious blogs. However, the city people probably don’t get the whole self-sufficiency thing like we do. It is just such a different life when it is work, home, entertainment. I can take a week at a time of it when I visit family in a beautiful downtown Chicago condo but then I am longing to get back to my country home and some meaningful work!

    As for Thanksgiving prep, since we are going to my moms I’m just making some sides, a pie and deviled eggs. I had totally forgotten about cranberry sauce though. I’m going to add that to my list.

    Unfortunately, you don’t have to live on a farm to get distracted! I have a small apartment in Dallas and I can walk to the work room to get a can of bird seed for my balcony feeder and see a stack of mail that needs to be gone through and find a bill that needs to be paid and on the way to get my check book, the phone rings and it’s my husband asking me to look for a camera lens which is in the bedroom where I see a load of wash that needs to be put in the washer.The birds do eventually get fed but about an hour later than I planned.
    Life is complex….but lovely. And I’m thankful for the birds, money to pay bills, the jobs that provide that money, clothes that need to be washed and a loving husband who calls me!

    I’m on attempt three for Grandmother Bread hoping I can get it to rise… The birds in my yard are loving me for the previous failures. :) I WILL be serving your cornmeal pull apart bread at Thanksgiving if it the last thing I do. That corn dish looks awesome!!

    Lead photo today is amazing.Your eye for composition never falters.
    Today I’ll be cleaning,baking, washing all that dusty stemware,putting another leaf in the table, assembling linens and serving pieces…making the cranberry relish (with orange and ginger) the applesauce (with jalapeno!)…more bread is rising for stuffing since we ate most of the first batch. I’ll prep some veggies,make pie dough,etc.
    I’ll go out and CUT BROCCOLI…IN MICHIGAN…this fall has been so spooky mild that I still have baby buds out there, also New Zealand spinach, the tips are still tender. That stuff never quits.
    First I have to tear myself away from CITR…at 8 am I’m OUTTA
    HERE…(I really mean it this time, really I do).

    Staff? Oh, Staff! Yeah, I have them, too.

    Mr. Bad Squirrel is in charge of gathering nuts. Mr. Cardinal will prepare the seed, and Mr. Woodpecker is responsible for the suet.

    This year, it’ll be just Rod, the Deer Family (who must eat outside since they’re not housebroken) and me.

    All my veggies are prepared since they’re summer goodness from my tiny garden or the farmer’s market.

    We’re having game hens, stuffing, gravy, corn, Brussel sprouts, sweet taters, mashed taters and something else that’s slipped my mind.

    Oh. Pie. Apple pie.

    Voted (11963 votes), and was shocked to see that two other people have higher numbers. I’ll Tweet more often.

    Brined turkey, candied yams, mashed potatoes, dressing, green bean casserole….hmmmmm….other stuff that my little mind is too full to bring to the front so I can type it. I work today and tomorrow so I have several lists going and many different directions to run in!
    I will forever refer to chickens as Fluffy Butts now. Makes so much more sense than just ‘chickens’.

    Anytime someone starts referring to you as a Martha Stewart, then you know they fear you. Period. I think more people are afraid of Martha’s power and influence than admire her cooking savvy or decorating hints.
    And you haven’t fired any of your “staff”-or do I mean fried any of your “staff” so you are way ahead of Martha!

    My staff has volunteered to help with Thanksgiving – only because it is such a notoriously fowl holiday and they are bovines.

    Our Thanksgiving and Christmas menu is the same and Written. In. Stone. Granite. If you must know!

    Turkey, bread & sausage stuffing, gravy, potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce (jelly ONLY!), black AND green olives, homemade pumpkin pie (from REAL pumpkins), Hershey Bar Pie and Chocolate Pecan Pie. :hungry:

    Now if I can just get SON to finish washing the dishes so I can get into my 3’x4′ kitchen :hissyfit: , I’ll be THRILLED. :yes:

    Suzanne: I have always been a fan of Martha Stewart, but I admire you much more for your determination and self-sufficiency. I’ve learned more from reading your daily blogs, than I could ever learn from dear Martha.     Your Thanksgiving dinner looks delicious!! I have been making fudge, pumpkin rolls, peanut butter balls, chocolate covered cocunut balls for the last 2 days. Two huge trays went to the clinic and hospital today. Another will be for family dinner.

    Oh, Cindy, there are city people among you! :happyflower: I live in the Chicago suburbs when I’m not up in Wisconsin.

    Suzanne’s blog is universal! It’s so awesome to me that we can all (city and country dwellers) meet here and find common ground and a sense of community.     Feeling very guilty and a little left out of busy Thanksgiving preparations this year. My kids started running our local “Turkey Trot” in the big city last year and started a new tradition… IHOP for Thanksgiving dinner. Oh, that is so wrong on so many levels.

    And I’m working. New job, can’t quite say “no” to the hours, yet. Bummer, Thanksgiving was always my favorite holiday. All of the food of Christmas with none of the gift-giving angst.

    I will, I will, I will own a farm of my own some day with the kids gathered around the dining room table for Thanksgiving dinner. And I will be very, very thankful.

    I am going to attempt to make homemade stuffing for the first time. I have been making grandmother bread instead of buying bread and no one eats the heels so I have a gallon freezer bag full of heels. I thought I could use that to make stuffing. Can I stuff the bird with the cornbread stuffing? Love your staff. We own a small business and a retired gentleman from our church does our taxes we call him our people. My husband says we’ll have to check with our people about that (he’s referring to our friend from church). He’s our people.

    Just a note regarding the Comments section on the Sam-e blog. The Terms indicate that yes, they do moderate, and it can take up to three days for posts to appear. But, it looks as if they usually post them relatively quickly.

My SIL is doing most of the cooking, but I’m taking a few dishes and one of his requests was scalloped corn. I have an old simple recipe of my grandmother’s, but this time I’m going to use your recipe! It looks scrumptious!

    on my well deserved lunch break having just finished an org chart for our group. I would be happy to complete an org chart for your organization with the names in the appropriate postions and a description of each of the functions of the positions. you would just have to remember to send any changes and updates to me so the the chart would be correct at all times. you would not want any of your staff to still be showing as the lowest on the “totem” pole (or the spool in your barnyard.)
    I would imagine that the “keeper of the cookies” would be at or close to the top of the chart. Just let me know and I can take care of this on my next 15 minute break or my 30 minute lunch.

    Good Morning! I just wanted to say that I have voted…ALWAYS and that I would like to know how often you write for the charleston daily and I swear if you say daily I will go knock my head against the wall for being that retarded that I had to ask an obvious question!     Jo Jo, I saw your 2 comments on that website, so they are there now. But, I’m having the same problem. I posted yesterday, and it seemed to “take”, but next time I looked it was gone. Today it was still gone, so I have posted it again – same thing. I thought maybe it was too long so I cut out some of it then posted for the third time. They do moderate. I clicked on the link “comment policy” which is below the comment form. It said they do moderate, but it didn’t say anything about length. Someone out there doesn’t like me! :hissyfit:

    Good day. The comments on the SAM-E site are really mounting. Out of 37 comments, 28 are for Suzanne, or roughly 75%. This is where the judges will actually see feedback about the contestants.

    Votes are just that…votes. But comments are from the audience SAM-E is trying to reach and they speak volumes about the feelings and confidence these people have for that contestant.

    Now’s the time to be letting SAM-E know the reason behind all those votes you gave for Suzanne. DON’T FORGET TO LEAVE A COMMENT!!!!!!!

    My staff (2 mini doxies) have really been a wonderful help to me during this busy week. If I drop something on the floor, they are right there to pick it up. If I need someone to taste test, they are right there on the job. Even keep my toes warm at night. Very loyal staff.

    Maybe they discovered a flaw in the system that I just discovered. If you switch browsers (from firefox to internet explorer for example), you can vote again from the same computer. If you switch computers as well …. that can add up. I’m not a computer person. If I stumbled on this, others have as well.

    Catslady, I had trouble like that, too. See above comments numbers 82 and 94. My complaint was a “Gentle” complaint saying I left a comment yesterday the 23rd, but it still isn’t posted and they are posting 24th ones already, and I wondered what I did wrong. I didn’t want to cause a bad reflection on Suzanne.

    thanksgiving I haven’t started yet … I know, I know. I do have my menu and all groceries purchased. I prefer to wait till morning to cook and maybe Wed night for baking.

    I’ve had the same trouble with the comment I posted on SAM-e yesterday–it still has not shown up on their website. I also read the policy statement about a possible delay, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt right now. But if it’s not there tomorrow, I’m re-posting.

    Like many of your followers, I’m at a loss about what else I can do to help boost the vote.

    I took a quick look at the other front runner blog sites. I expect they want this gig just as much as you.The folks that vote for them evidently are working the “extra vote”technique as detailed on here by many of your supporters.I’m glad all the SAMe contestants have people that really want to help them.We should all be so lucky…but I trust the judges to make the best decision about who should represent SAMe.That being said….I don’t see how you could lose!Namaste.

Things are a little hectic here this week (deer season & Thanksgiving) but next week I will see what we can get done (if anything) in regards to a news story.     Suzanne, What I love about your blog is that it appeals to all generations–not just vegetarian yuppies. You promote REAL FOOD, healthy food and recipes with real natural ingredients. Americans in general are NOT strict vegetarians, and although I do love my veggies, I need a little meat too! I also appreciate how you encourage everyone to make things with their hands, to be resourceful, and how there is beauty in the “ordinary”. To try to promote you in the contest I have been “SHARING” different posts with recipes everday (presently those that pertain to a Thanksgiving menu and asking my “facebook friends” to click & vote AND “share” it on their own facebook home page. After Thanksgiving I’ll post Xmas ones til Dec. 7. I think this is a great way to reach others to vote. V.
