Crab cakes at Banana Cabana Restaurant on the beach at the Isle of Palms.

1. Coconut shrimp
2. Crab cakes
3. Fried Oysters

Those are my top three must-haves any time I am where good seafood is available.

Fried oysters at Charleston Crab House downtown in the historic district.

And then I want everything else after that, too.

Kids sharing an appetizer plate of sauteed mussels.

I’ve never met a seafood menu I didn’t love, but I have been around just enough really great fresh seafood in my life to be a little spoiled and disinclined to order it out much unless I am someplace like Charleston, South Carolina, where I know it’s going to be fresh and fantastic–and then I have to eat it non-stop. We’ve been out eating seafood every night. I’ve been through my top three favorites list. I need mahi mahi now. And grilled telapia. And crab legs. And–

Stuffed shrimp at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

I’m never coming home! I can’t! THERE’S SEAFOOD HERE!!!!

The Charleston Crab House is a must every time we go to Charleston. You are making me want to drive down just for the crab legs! LOL

  6. Becky says:

Oh, and don’t for Krispy Kreme (HOT NOW)!!!

  7. Marianne G says:

YUMMO, my mouth is watering! You’re making me excited for my vacation to start. We’ll be on the Gulf coast in 9 days, feasting on fresh seafood for a week. I put almost as much effort into planning our dinners out as I do where we’re going to stay.

  8. Sandra in SC says:

Do try the Shrimp and Grits at Sullivan’s on Sullivan’s Island. This is more of a local’s restaurant and has really good food. The fresh flounder is awesome. So glad ya’ll are enjoying your trip!

  9. Anita says:

I laughed this a.m. when I saw this post! My husband and I went to Hatteras for our honeymoon last summer, and ate seafood every meal, every day. I have pictures just like this on my little blog! I think you and I would be BFF’s  if we went to the beach together. Just another reason why I love to read your blog.

And once I got in the shower, I started wondering about the girlfriend, too. Glad to see CindyP beat me to the question. You might remind little girlfriend that clams and scallops don’t have faces, so it’s not quite the same as eating a shrimp. 😆

  10. Suz in the Tules says:

    :hungry:
    MMMMMMMM! Bubba Gump’s Cocoanut Shrimp!
I discovered that on a vacation on Maui and that’s what I ate…every night! LOL

  11. Cousin Sheryl says:

Alright, you are making me toooooo hungry! I want some fresh seafood!

    :hungry:

  12. jackie c says:

What was stuffing the shrimp? :airkiss:

  13. Heather M says:

I highly recommend Gilligan’s while you’re there. I think there’s one in Charleston, but there’s DEFINITELY one in Goose Creek. We always hit the Goose Creek location when I’m in the area visiting family and had some of the best food and service.

  14. Denise says:

We just came back from a vacation in Hawaii where we ate a lot of really fresh seafood, specifically mahi mahi. It was wonderful!

  15. Ramona says:

That is some delicious looking food.

  16. Nancy in Iowa says:

Oh, groan! I want tilapia! Mahi-Mahi! I want shrimp and grits. Lots of shrimp! Fried Shrimp. Shrimp scampi. Oh, help!

  17. Joy (from Illinois) says:

Yummy! Now I’m hungry and EXPECIALLY hungry for seafood. I agree that if you’ve been around great fresh seafood you really want to indulge when you hit a coastal town. I won’t eat lobster outside of Maine since we would get it from the lobsterman who lived next door to my husband’s cousin on an island in Casco Bay. He’d drop off a couple of lobster when he rowed home for lunch. Boy oh boy! And we’d walk along the beach gathering mussels.

On the gulf coast of Texas it used to be easy to have a friend with a boat bring you back a mess of shrimp when they went out to fish. I’ve seen my mother’s sink full of shrimp for us to clean–all for the cost of a couple of beers offered to the fisherman who droped them off for us. YUM. Fresh shrimp to peel, sauce to dip them in, salad and bread and you’ve got a meal for the gods.

  18. Window On The Prairie says:

I know the feeling. We live in Kansas. No seafood here, but we do have freshwater fish, and they’re pretty amazing too. :hungry:

  19. rileysmom says:

Okay, now I’m truly jealous! Enjoy some for me!

  20. jan~n~tn says:

Oh Suzanne- You can’t say you’re never coming home! 😥 You have many Baby pictures to share with us(remember?). BP, GB, the ducks, and bucks, and sheeps, and donkeys, not to forget the rest of the goats. OH and then there’s 52. They all miss your tender kisses and cookies :hissyfit: Remember all the hard work..from dawn till dusk? Sure you do, and those are exactly the same reasons that you need to stay there for as long as you can… and enjoy some YOU TIME!

  21. Turtle Mom says:

I currently live in the Midwest, but grew up on the East Coast and lived on Cape Cod prior to moving to Indiana. I am fortunate to be able to visit family on the Cape every June and absolutely gorge myself on fresh seafood daily while I am “home”. I have even been known to eat lobster for breakfast! Enjoy the seafood while you can! Have a safe trip home! I can’t wait to see Clover’s newest baby!

  22. Kristen E says:

Oh man, I’m jealous! My husband and I moved from San Francisco (wonderful seafood) to Indiana (not so much seafood). It took some adjustment! We occasionally go up to Chicago where they get fresh fish flown in daily, so that’s at least better than the frozen stuff we usually get!

  23. roosterrun says:

You need to try A. W. Shucks down by the market. They are reasonablt priced. It is a good lunch place. My Dad catches some of the biggest shrimp down there. And he and my brother do ok with Mahi Mahi too. It is easy to get spoiled. They usually bring goodies when they come to visit.

  24. JOC says:

You are bringing back some wonderful memories of some devine food. I too, look forward to the great seafood whenever we travel near the coasts. Lets not forget though, we have magnificent meats and veggies here in the midwest too!

  25. 4jsMOM says:

Shame on you for making me so hungry for “real” seafood. But I am so glad you and your family are enjoying time together, especially the mealtimes. Missing you in WV, but glad to hear about your vacation each day.

  26. Lindsay says:

Oh my gosh! I was all content to have spaghetti with meat sauce tonight, and now my stomach is rumbling for crab cakes. Oh crab cakes…and scallops, and coconut shrimp…I think I need me some seafood.

  27. whaledancer says:

Oh, I know what you mean: eating really fresh seafood spoils you for the store-bought kind. Every time I have really fresh shrimp it’s a couple of years before I can enjoy eating the frozen ones. And I can remember those fresh seafood meals years later, and it brings back the place where I ate it and the company I was with. Eat up some good memories while you’re there.
