Little Bitty Cucumber Quest (BBB)

May
26

I’ve been on a little bitty cucumber quest since last year when we tried to grow some little bitty cucumbers so I could make some little bitty pickles. It’s all right to be little bitty…. (I like that song.) Anyway! So last year I had to go out of town unexpectedly and the cucumbers got too big while I was gone. You gotta harvest the little bitties when it’s time or you’re sunk. Or not totally sunk, but there goes your sweet little Gherkin pickle dream. And sweet little Gherkins are my favorites.

I’m trying again this year.

In case you love sweet little bitty baby pickles, too, I posted the recipe from the BBB here: Sweet Gherkin Pickles.

You have any thwarted canning dreams you’re trying to make come true in your garden this year?

Need a BBB to go along with your pickles (or whatever you’re dreaming of)?

If they get too big think hot dog relish. The recipe I use makes a sweet relish with a bit of kick using hot red peppers.

I like to make pickles after the cucumbers are ripe, that is when they are yellow and look like little blimps. It is a long process involving multiple soakings and rinsings, but oh so good with vegetables! Please enter me for the BBB.

My dream for my garden this year is just to have dry weather to get it planted. I work outside the home and haven’t had good weekends for planting. We were also out of town for a week on vacation, so that didn’t help, either. Ok, I’ll stop whining now and just ask for the BBB, please!!!

I’m trying a new seed this year for cucumbers which you can use while they are small for pickles or if you let them get big they are still good for slicers, but the best part is they are supposed to be disease resistant to many diseases , hope they live up to their reputation. Please put me in for the BBB.

I am a major dill pickle addict…over the years I got my recipe just right and made my own that were, for me, perfect. Suzanne, did your cucumbers stay crisp? I love pickles and tried making these last year (used a different recipe however), and I was very disappointed. They weren’t crunchy enough for me and they came out too salty. I would like to try again with your recipe but thought I would check with you. I worry about wasting cucumbers. I had to throw out last year’s batch.

Gerkins are my favorite too! Given all the work of brining them, I’ve found it sensible to just go ahead and plant a bunch of vines so I can harvest them all over a couple days and get on with it. Seems to me I saw a cuke variety in a seed catalog that is supposed to stay relatively small, but I can’t remember the name of it…

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
