Not Planning to Miss a Meal

Nothing like sitting right in the food pan to make sure you don’t miss anything!

Apparently I’ve left the bread post up too long to please some people. This is food-related, right? Buttercup lives to serve. Or lives for his food, take your pick.

Anyway, in actual human food-related news, whilst I was without internet, I made 8 loaves of (regular) bread and 5 loaves of raisin bread. Sliced and put in the freezer. The raisin bread is to go with one of the breakfasts at the retreat and the regular bread is for the party. I also put away some pies in the freezer for the party. I made 8 pounds of soap to sell at the party, and spent a lot of time working Shortcake (mostly to no avail, trying to work on her “catching” issue). I also spent most of one day preparing Morgan’s feast that she requested after Weston (the vegetarian) went back to Morgantown–ham, mashed potatoes, peas, green beans, scalloped corn, rolls, and brownies. Like a big holiday meal, but without the extra people here to eat, which Morgan was determined should not stop me from putting on a feast. So I did.

Maybe Buttercup will do a craft for me later so I can update the House & Garden page. I’ve updated the Country Living and Barn pages repeatedly in the last several weeks as that is where my focus has been in projects around the farm. My blog reflects my life, so some categories get more focus at some times than others. (I promise to get Farm Bell Recipes updated as soon as I can–I’m so behind at the moment.) Meanwhile, I still have internet today….so far. How come I get internet AFTER I cancel my account? I should have cancelled my account SOONER.

I think Buttercup sitting in his feed dish is cooking related! I am really glad to hear you will have soap for sale at the retreat…..can’t wait!!

Ha! Buttercup giving you a hint? Smart cat. Can’t wait to try your raisin bread at the retreat! And pie? OMG! I’m going to have to go on a diet when I get home… ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Is Buttercup your oldest cat?
Sorry, Buttercup, didn’t mean to call attention to your age… ๐Ÿ˜•
I meant to say, is Buttercup the cat that has been with you for the longest time? I seem to remember you writing about him some years ago…

This is a wonderful picture for this topic. It made me laugh. I love cats.

“HOw come I get internet AFTER I cancel my account” I’m laughing out loud with you!

Suzanne, you do a LOT. You don’t post everything you do and yet just what you post can make people feel tired! More importantly, what you post uplifts people and encourages. You always seem to have so much energy and are so good, at least from my point of view, at juggling everything. Yet, even as busy as you are, you’re willing to help your friends. Whether it be brainstorming about what’s wrong with my cheesemaking, being willing to come help with the milking or haying, or taking my calls about a sick cow you never make me feel like I’m taking you away from something more important. That is a talent, my friend. So many times I wonder, how in the world did she find the time to do that post! Maybe it’s not really you, but the Cricked Little Hen? I bet you have her pecking away at the keyboard, don’t ya? :chicken:

Well, apparently your disgruntled former reader was looking for quantity rather than quality in your postings. Personally, I believe that your posts are worth waiting for. If nothing new is posted in the morning, I’ll just check back later. No worries!

I do have one question concerning your post-Weston feast: what is scalloped corn? I’ve had scalloped potatoes, but I’ve never heard of scalloped corn.

Love the expression on Buttercup’s face; it’s the same steely-eyed stare my little darling gives me when she’s willing me to do something. ๐Ÿ˜€

I don’t know if this will help or if you have tried it. When we were kids, and had horses sometimes we had horses that did not want to be caught. We would take a short rope or a lead and stick it in the back waist of our pants. Let one end hang down so it was easy to get. Then get a bucket of feed. Once the horse is eating the feed hold the bucket in one hand and use the other to slip the rope around their neck. Sure was better than chasing a horse all over the pasture. Some of the horses got to the place we could catch them with an empty bucket.

Love all your posts. Buttercup is a very smart cat. By the Way next time the vegetarians show up try some. Morning Star Farms products. We love the soy sausage and we make our tacos and chili with their beef-like crumbles. Not so much grease.
Keep up the good work. Don’t let the nay-sayers get you down.

Suzanne, Don’t let that emailer get you down. What a nastygram when you work so hard.

By the way, I have CIR bookmarked as https://chickensintheroad.com/2012/ that way I see all the posts in chronological order.

  16. rasely says:

My sister-in-law, when she was little, would put a stuffed cat in her toy oven. “Cook the cat” became a favorite family saying–but I wouldn’t say it in Buttercup’s hearing.

  17. jeannieq says:

Suzanne, What kind of food does Buttercup like best? That may make it even more food related. Just kidding really! But I did spend part of my weekend cooking up some dog food which can get really expensive when you have more than 1 dog and are trying to adjust to a lower income! I know you teach canning. Have you ever canned any dog food or cat food?

  18. Remudamom says:

Clinton Anderson has a lot to say about horses that won’t let you catch them. You should check it out.
