You Can Can (BBB) | Chickens in the Road

I’ve been trying to get back into my regular BBB days since the upheaval of the move, but the upheaval just keeps coming! And here I was so hoping my life would be so placid that I would not have a sequel to the memoir. Anyway! I’ve decided to spice up the BBB giveaways for a bit by sharing some of the other great preserving literature that is available, so I’m planning some BBBs that are not actually BBBs. (Make sense? Confusing enough? Just keeping you on your toes here.) Up for grabs today is a copy of You Can Can!: A Visual Step-by-Step Guide to Canning, Preserving, and Pickling, with 100 Recipes. What I love about this one is that it includes a LOT of photos, and if you’re a visual learner, this might be just right for you. (I love this one so much, I’ll be doing several upcoming giveaways with it, so if you don’t win this time, try try again!)

We had winter last night, but spring is on it’s way. BBB would make it easier to save the fruits and vegetables this year. So glad Coco is back and on the mend at the Vets.

heya all…I actually do a workshop named…”Yes…you CAN can”…I present it to the Learning in Retirement folks at the local Community college and have presented at our local Many Ways of Peace. Canning, fermenting…dehydrating…freezing…we hardly buy any groceries in the winter up here in Northern Wisconsin…love and peace

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Would love to share this with my organically, healthy kids who are very conscious of preservatives,etc. in the foods they eat. The need to start preserving their own.

I am a city girl (well woman) with a country heart! I usually have a balcony potted vegetable garden and after becoming a follower of your blog want to can now. I have no idea how to do that and I don’t have a sweet mature woman to teach me. I would LOVE the book!! I can buy it if I have too but winning it would be so much sweeter and it is Valentine’s day and all !!

I’ve always wanted to learn how to can but have been intimidated by what seems to be a complicated process. That and I’m only a little worried that I’ll poison my family. I’d love to have a copy of the “You Can Can” book. It would be nice to branch out beyond making freezer jam. BBB

Welllll…here is my confession….I bought a canner 4 years ago and I have still not used it. I bought books, read and studied the manual (which I never do!)…I am terrified of it!!! I could not for the life of me figure out why and then I remembered my grandmother’s pressure canner went kapow when I was a kid – guess that must be at least part of the reason.

My wife and I do a lot of cooking and we’re always in need of ways of making stuff last just a little bit longer. I love canning and have done it for a long time with pickles and peppers, and I’d love to try canning other types of foods.

Would love a BBB that isn’t a BBB. I have a couple of days off from work in a row and am going to try canning applesauce and crockpot apple butter. I don’t think those need a pressure canner but a waterbath still counts as canning, right?

Don’t worry, I will research carefully before tackling this project. My need for research half the reason I never get around to attempting the projects that I want to try. Canning, dehydrating, soapmaking, candle making etc., etc. I just can’t read enough about any of them. It’s the actual doing that has me stymied.

I have wonderful memories of helping my Granny tend her garden in the summers and then watching all that fresh goodness get preserved with care. This summer, I am going to follow that example and start canning from my own garden! BBB
