Evening Update with Great (!!) Jubilation! We have water!!! After more efforts, trying various things of which I comprehend naught, it came back to the pump, which appeared to be working but maybe all was not as appeared since no other trouble could be found. Anyway, like I understand well speak. The pump was pulled out and a new one installed. (The “old” one is only six months old so will be returned for a refund!) We have running water!!!
And new smileys to celebrate!

I must go admire the running water now…..and do dishes and laundry and flush toilets just for fun! AND BAKE SOME BREAD!
Day Six. No water.
Dinner: Unplanned.
Mood: Fateful.
Prior to A) digging up 1000 feet of water line, or B) calling in costly assistance, a Hail Mary effort will be made today to troubleshoot the pump that appears to be working properly but maybe is not.
If this doesn’t work, I will be jumping off this bridge.

New River Bridge. This photo is making me miss summer.
If you want to check back, I’ll update this post this evening, either with Great (!!) Jubilation, or to say farewell as I head for the above-mentioned bridge. (I’ll leave you all a photo of the bridge in its wintry wonder in my will.)

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....

PLEASE BE THE PUMP! We don’t want you to jump, that looks pretty high! Who would let us live vicariously through them reading about cute farm animals, pies, and seasonal decor?!?!?!?! I know it’s not about us…….
Prayers are with you still today!

P.S. I know what you are going through, try jumping off of the structure housing your pump first.

My husband says take a look at the check valve……

Youv’e probably thought of this already.

It’s all about the spin you put on what life deals you, isn’t it? How about this being your ‘homesteading phase’? It’s temporary, but oh the water hauling lessons you are learning!
Forget the bridge. Your community is hugging you back and giving you a thumbs up! =;)

But if you do, I agree with the practical ones above – soap up, take advantage of the water, and take lots of pictures.
Kidding aside – I do hope you find the problem TODAY! And tell Clover it isn’t always about her….

I’ll be waiting and thinking of you all day…be sure and let us know the status of things later. At least you’re not in Iowa where temp will be minus 20 tonight (minus 40 with wind chill). My cows are calling….

I’ve thought about the homesteading aspect. The difference is that a hundred years ago, they were set up for this. They (usually) had wells near the house with a pail you could draw up. An outhouse. Large sinks and/or washtubs to do dishes, sometimes even a hand pump in the kitchen or just outside the door. And they were accustomed to the situation. Today, even if you have a house in the country (!), we aren’t set up to live that way. It’s like camping out inside your house. Only worse than camping out because you aren’t set up to camp out….
I think it’s time to build an outhouse!

I hope they get it fixed. Being without water that long is awful. Last time ours went out it was the foot valve and we replaced it only to have it go bad a couple of months later. Had to dig it up again and found out the new foot valve had came apart. What a pain. Good luck today.

Then after I married, the idiot to whom I was married, was always leaving the crawl space open to the underside of the house and letting the pipes freeze. Then my poor dad would have to come thaw them out.
I can certainly empathize with you.

I was thinking you should move in with someone until this is over, but then I guess someone needs to be there for the animals. How are you getting water for them to drink?

Thank goodness you are back amongst the “LIVING”!!
And to add to that, we have 2 wells. One for the house and one across the road for the water in the barn. Sheeeesshhhh, talk about problems.
I commiserate with you many times over. We’ve had many such problems over the years……all usually involving pulling MULTI FEET of Water Well Pipe
Just think……the new year is only 14 days old….and you have a new Pump to CELEBRATE
!
AFTER you get all caught up……you deserve a nice Bubble Bath, and than a nice long nap! I know 52 will accommodate all your wishes cause you will make him BREAD!!

I live in southwest Iowa and the water people’s filtration plant had problems and our water wasn’t getting filtered correctly and a boil order was put on.
Not being a major water boiler, my husband and I cut way back on our water usage and went to the store and bought a few jugs of water. Luckily we got it when we did because shortly after the store ran completely out of water. We were on a boil order for about two weeks!!! It drove me crazy because you couldn’t just use the water to brush your teeth, or even just get some from the tap to do a little cooking with. It was terribly upsetting. I sympathize with you.
