It Makes Sense Now

When I was a kid, we had no activities. Well, besides piano lessons, which we hated, and church. We went to church three times a week and attended every church function or youth group activity. Well, unless it was a church ski trip. No ski trips. We might break a leg that way. My parents were into streamlining their lives. Broken legs were trouble. So were pets–we didn’t have many of those. That would have involved veterinarian visits and regular feeding. To this day, my dad doesn’t even have a bird feeder. That would attract birds. Birds poop on the driveway and the sidewalk and the cars. NO BIRDS. BIRDS ARE BAD.

Last Saturday we spent the entire day with our daughter who was participating at the Awana Games. Today she has a soccer game. Our youngest son has a robotics class at the local college. Our older son has baseball practice. ::thunk:: I am tired already. Sometimes I think my parents had it right.

Except about the birds. I like birds. I don’t even mind the poop.

I don’t have a bird feeder either. Or pets. But my kids did have hockey, and baseball, and piano lessons, and … and …

I am very afraid of the day my kids will be old enough for organized sports…

I never did any after school activities when I was a kid. But we almost always had a pet.

And I’d be bored stiff without my birdfeeders outside my window. I like being able to look out and see all the different kinds of birds. Except the grackles. I’d cheerfully wring all their little necks.

With three active kids, I feel your pain! Today I’ve got a track meet, a dance thingie, and a basketball practice …

We were the exact opposite! No outside activities, but we had HUNDREDS of animals, and many of those were pets! (Heh. We didn’t have TIME for outside activities! *g*)

What luck kids those McMinn kids. My mother always told us to go play in the backyard.

I’m with you on the activities, and my kids are barely old enough yet. This summer we’re already looking at piano lessons, tennis lessons, gymnastics, and swim lessons. And that’s just for ONE kid. The 3yo only does swim lessons so far.

God help me when they’re older and I spend more time going to their activities than I do sleeping.

I had Hebrew School on Mondays,Wednesdays and Sundays and dancing school on Saturdays. Mom dropped me off and came back when it was over.
We couldn’t have pets either although every time Dad attempted to sneak one in,Mom found a reason to get rid of it.

Jewish superstition states that birds are a bad omen!! Just my luck I was named after one!!

Ah, well we don’t have bird feeders, but that’s because we have cats, and I tend to think the two are mutually exclusive.

“Come pretty little birds! Come feed at our bounteous, generous table! Come and… oh. Sorry. Didn’t we mention the Evil Death That Stalks The Table? Our condolences to your wife and nestlings.”

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
