This evening, sitting on the porch, we heard the first spring peepers of the year!!!

We had a backyard full of robins last week. My 16 month old grandson enjoyed watching them.

Yes, we love the peepers! They won’t be peeping here in Maine for another month at least. Our stream out back is covered with 2 feet of snow and about a foot of ice, so they are still sleeping out there in the frozen mud.
I’m happy for you, hearing the frogs. It’s a sure sign of spring.

NO WAY!!!! It’s too early!!! WOW! Peepers! *sigh*

Peepers are little so called ‘chorus frogs’. Only in the east and they hibernate in the winter under leaves and logs and stones etc, once the ground thaws enough, out they come and they start to sing, and boy are they loud!

I heard the robin this Morning I was shocked because we have 3 feet of snow with more in the forecast.
I love the sound of the peepers.

Been hearing them in eastern KY for a couple of weeks. Also Robins in the yard,Bluebirds checking out nesting boxes and millers flying around the porch light. Sure signs of Spring!
I love your blog and your laid-back life in the woods.

I love peepers! They are my first sign of spring here. Unfortunately the pond they occupy is still quite frozen and covered with snow and will be for another 6-8 weeks. :-( Enjoy yours!

I can’t believe how early spring comes to the other part of the U.S. We aren’t even anywhere near spring yet. We still have the March snows to get through. Maybe with any luck we won’t have any – ha ! At least all this week it is in the 60s but I haven’t seen any bloomers yet.

It’s a lovely noise isn’t it? It reminds me of the tropics.. we have a similar frog in Barbados called the whistling frog. This video is a pretty good representation of our night sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6maS9Tzuyw&feature=related (not my video).

Thank you all for telling me about peepers. I didn’t think they were an actual word – something Suzanne made up. . . . hee, hee! So, we have been hearing robins sing in our tree – but not frogs yet. We have a creek that runs on 3 sides of our place and a pond – so always plenty of frogs singing. I need to find out what kind of frogs we have! I’ve just been thrilled to hear the robins!

Best sound in the world after a long, cold and snowy winter. My sister has a nice pond on her farm in Missouri and that’s one of the best things in the world! That and when the first martins come to scout out the area for spring homes!

You have to hear them three times and then spring will be here to stay.It’ll be another month before we hear them-lucky you. But the geese are back, along with starlings and red wing blackbirds.So, spring’s coming, just too slow.

I don’t believe we have peepers here in Colorado, but we do have robins. Actually they winter over at times.
Still down in the low 20′s at night so spring will be a while in coming. Usually we get a big snow about the 1st of March, then on the 20th the temps reach 70 or higher!!!

Our chorus frogs have been in high gear for a week or more…Actually heard a “peeper” the last week of January eventhough it was cold..but it had rained a cold rain..Guess he thought it was spring…I am hearing the toads trill occasionally when the chorus frogs don’t drown them out as well as a few late peepers….
It’s the birds that are beginning to get in high gear here, just before and after daylight…I love it!!!

I heard peepers here tonight, too. First time this year. We also had thunder and lightning, tonight. Am looking forward to warm weather, gardens, and even mowing grass.

The story here about peepers is that they have to look thru 3 panes of glass (ice) before it is really spring. I heard them first about 10 days ago. Peeper night should be a holiday!

I love to hear the peepers. We just have Red Wing Blackbirds, sure sign of Spring in Pennsylvania, can’t wait to hear the peepers on our pond.
