My cousin brought me this early Christmas present from the anti-mall–the Salvation Army store. It’s a cookie press! I’m very excited! It’s in perfect, unopened condition, all sealed up. Brand new. If you haven’t thought about thrift stores, second-hand stores, antique stores, or Salvation Army stores this holiday season–think of them! You can find wonderful things at these places, including, sometimes, brand new things that someone else just didn’t want. (My cousin could have even not told me where he got it, but he did because he knows how I appreciate such a frugal find.)

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....

I was blessed this week with 4 new knit sweaters from a thrift store from a co-worker. She was rather apologetic when she gave them to me. I was THANKFUL! I’ve been needing a few new shirts to wear. It’s cold and these are warm. Told her I did hand-me-downs QUITE well! And the secondary blessing is THEY FIT. I’m doing a happy dance. Oh, they still had their store tags on them along with extra buttons on one or two of them.

I also go to the ReStore (near Greens Feed & Seed) in Charleston…They have alot of “stuff”, bought a roll of perforated drainage pipe for $25.00, 24″ fence for the bottom of our wooden fence for $3.00.
Alot of my family thinks I am crazy but I even bought the book- “Frugal Living for Dummies”.

My sisters and I can’t always spend Christmas together because of our individual families, and so we developed our own unique holiday we call Janumas (Christmas in January). We use pillow cases as stockings and fill each other’s “stockings” with little things. And the rule is the cheapest one wins. So we shop sales, make things, go to thrift stores all year round looking for the winning present – something fun, pretty, or useful and CHEAP. One year my husband and I purchased a TV. It came with free DVD player. We already had a DVD player. That was one of my gifts to my sister.
I was declared the Ultimate Winner, and I still refer to that in some of our arguments over who is the Cheapest Of Us All. It is a badge I wear proudly.
