A few of the hens are participating in a nest here in a corner beside the dog house that Eclipse and Rhett use for bedtime in the goat pen. The dogs can’t get in the goat pen, so it’s as safe a spot as any. I stopped picking the eggs up from this nest and I’m hoping for spring chicks, home-grown, and mama-raised!

Thats the way I would do it,homegrown and mama raised and just let nature take its course. Cant wait to see the lil peeps!

I’ve been watching my girls to see if I have a broody hen amongst the gang. I hope so. I plan on getting some fertilized eggs from a farmer friend and trying the “Mommy-raised” method. That way the chicks are introduced to the flock by Momma and are protected.

We have Moscovy Ducks in our neighborhood and one of the females is nesting in a tree down the block. Last year 7 balls of yellow fluff tumbled out and marched to the run-off pond. Ain’t Spring grand.

kind of early for WV mine has not showed any sign of being broody

If you don’t get any hens that volunteer to be broody you might need to get yourself a hen or two of a non egg-laying breed they have bred most of the broodiness out of egg-laying breeds so they get more eggs. One of the cutest breeds of chickens (silkies) are great moms though. You get some really pretty cross breeds also when crossed with larger chickens.
