I got lost twice coming back from Point Pleasant last night. It was 1 a.m. before I got home. I’m not much for traveling to away games, driving on dark, twisty roads to unfamiliar places, but I’m not missing a minute of Weston’s last few football games.
They played #8 Point Pleasant. (Roane County Raiders were ranked 9th in the playoff lineup.) They were ahead at halftime, but slipped in the second half. By the time there was a minute left in the game, they were losing by one point. Down to under a minute and it looked pretty bad.

The stadium was PACKED. I thought we’d never get through the bumper to bumper traffic heading into the high school by kick-off time, but we made it. Barely.

The Point Pleasant crowd was going crazy by the time the seconds started ticking down on the clock under a minute. I was ready for a miracle. The Raiders made it to the 5 yard line, where they could hardly help themselves from making a touchdown then for some reason they got moved back to the 25 yard line. (I still don’t understand what’s going on half the time.) The Point Pleasant crowd went wild, so excited. And then with 35 seconds left on the clock and despite being set back, the Raiders scored and won the game 33-28.

It was pretty amazing.

Roane County has never made it past the first round of the playoffs before. They’ll play #1 Ravenswood next week.
I’m so glad I didn’t let Weston quit. He’s having the time of his life playing on the winningest team his high school has ever put on the field.

And now it’s 2 a.m. and I’m going to bed.

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
