Kristen, a reader here, emailed me recently that she had bought this book after I talked about it when I was getting ready to make soap for the first time. It’s truly the most comforting, practical soapmaking book I’ve read. The author breaks down and dispels scary myths about soapmaking, and holds your hand in a reassuring way as she explains how to make soap safely but without fear. However, Kristen ultimately decided soapmaking wasn’t in the cards for her.

But she had the book….

And she wants to give it to one of you who will make soap. So generous! (Thank you, Kristen!)

The book is Smart Soapmaking by Anne L. Watson. It was published in 2007, so it’s a fairly recent publication and has all the up-to-date information you need. If you want to be in the running to win the book, just leave me a note in the comments letting me know that you are ready to make soap!

I was online looking for soap making recipes tonight. I used to make soap all the time! My husband makes packaging equipment. The company he works for built a machine for Colgate-Palmolive. We have Irish Spring in every hidden nook and cranny of our home. So, I haven’t made in any in about 5 years. Recently I signed up to participate in a craft swap. I decided to play kitchen scientist and make soap… I just have to remember how. (

Oh please pick me I have been wanting to make soap for years but I’ve been afraid. I’ve read many soap making blogs and enjoy them so much. But still the fear to make it myself lingers. First I don’t know where to buy the products then I don’t know how much for sure to put in. And on and on.

Just an FYI….Anne is writing another soapmaking book so be sure to watch for it also. Another suggestion for new soap makers is to join a soapmaking group devoted to soap and bath/body products. You can interact daily with soapers. Soapmaking 101 is a good site to start with and Majestic Mountain Sage is a supplier with their teaching group list. You will enjoy both group. It becomes an addiction in not time. And one of the commenters said she made hot process soap and is afraid of cold process……cold process is easier, just blend ingredients, pour into mold and walk away for 24 hr.

Years ago I helped a neighbor make soap, but would really like to have written, up-to-date information on how it’s done. Thank you for your website. I enjoy reading it daily. When I go to the computer, I tell my husband I going to check on my goats. He knows I am headed to logging on CITR. Linda

Woo hoo ! good luck to who ever wins. no need to enter me in the give away as I have a really nice soapmaking book and have copied tons of stuff from the internet , printed it up and made a book in a binder that way. I just wanted to say I made your Lavender basil soap yesterday . I am making soap as Bridal shower favors for my niece. I will be making this again , but for ME! I love it, thanks for sharing your recipe.
