This little black hen won’t stay off the porch lately. She found it and she loves it. I can’t blame her–I love the porch, too, and I have a soft spot for her. I call her the crooked chicken because her beak is crooked. (Can you see it?) It hasn’t hurt her–she’s popular with the boys and she’s a year and a half old now. She was hatched from my first incubator batch last year. (Her beak was crooked from the start.) She always seems to be stylin’ despite her homely appearance. Which makes me feel good about myself when I’m out there on the porch in my long johns…..

I have seen birds with that beak, they’re called Crossbeak. If it’s found in a chicken they usually cull them 😮 so they aren’t bred. I think she’s a very pretty and unique gal.

Oh, we had a twisted beak lady too. Her name was “Twisty”, named by my boys. She died this Fall and only lasted about 6 months. She was the sweetest thing though, and I babied her, gave her extra grain, etc. Looks like yours is a healthy girl! I miss Twisty…

I have one like that named Miss Betty Hen. My hubby trimmed her beak once and it bled a bit…that was the first and LAST time he ever did that…he felt terrible! :hungry2: (pitchfork!)

Years ago I volunteered at the Catoctin Zoo north of Frederick, MD, where they had a duck with a very deformed beak. However, she had no problem getting by – when you offered cracked corn to her she just turned her head sideways and kind of scooped the grain from your hand! Mother Nature does look after her children!

I have a homely turkey…she damaged her beak when she was a baby and the others would peck at it horribly. I kept some yucky smelling salve on it to deter them and it seemed to work. Sadly, she lost her top beak and I assumed she wouldn’t survive long. That was nearly 4 years ago! Malformed animals have always held a special spot in my heart.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes a plain or homely woman will be a hit with the men at a party? For some reason the women can’t see, the men find her fascinating. Charisma is often more a matter of personality and “aura” than looks. Perhaps the roosters find this little hen charismatic, despite her odd beak, for reasons the humans can’t see?

I have a little crooked hen, too! Her beak was crooked from the start as well. I named her Toughy cuz I didn’t think she would make it, but she has a fighting spirit and continues to do well.

Crooked Little Hen’s beak can be trimmed and that may help her to be more comfortable. I have a crooked chick now. She’s a Buff Silkie and her name is Sideways Sally. :sun:
