The Old Farmhouse and Me

May
31

This photo was taken during one of my many childhood visits to the old farmhouse. That’s me on the left in the yellow. My father is on the right, Great-Uncle Carl on the left, and Great-Aunt Ruby in the middle. (The other girl is my sister.) We’re standing, of course, in front of the great, big porch of the old farmhouse. I could never have imagined then that I would one day live there for 2 1/2 years and that that house would change my life.

It reminds me of the porch in front of my Great-Uncle Mert’s and Great-Aunt Jane’s house in PA.

That is absolutely precious. I knew which one was you right away. I would love that slanted little house, too. Looking at it, I recalled when your father came and taught you how to milk. I’m guessing you will get a lot of comments of readers memories that you have stirred with this photo and post. I’m glad you told us who each person is.

Isn’t life funny how it sometimes goes in a big wide circle, only to come back to the beginning….

Today is a good memories day…

What a great picture. I can see where your boys look like their grandfather. Doesn’t life take strange turns..and for a reason. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for all your interesting stories. I can’t start my day until I’ve visited your blog. So many people don’t realize how important the stories of our older generation are until they are gone. My husband and I are constantly needing questions answered about family and events and the people who could answer them are not with us anymore.

this is beautiful and endearing. I’ve sat here looking at it for a long time before realizing that I’m just grinning.
I love how your father has his pants hitched up high, your red shoes, how you’re clutching your right hand with your left, Great Aunt Ruby’s reluctance(?) at being photographed and her shirtwaist! There is a family resemblance in all the faces. This is a wonderful snapshot of time standing still for one brief moment.

Granny Ruby hated to have her picture taken! I do have one of her with a joyous smile on her face and I just treasure it. I will have to scan it sometime and let Suzanne share it with you. In this picture, you can really see the family resemblance between Ruby and her nephew, Ross. Suzanne has their nose, I think! (Look at her sidebar picture if you don’t believe me.)

    Great picture post, Suzanne!

That’s a really nice picture. You must of had some pretty good memories to move back there. There’s no place like home… :moo:

Lovely photo. Looks like my grandmother’s front porch.

  10. Nancy says:

Wonderful photo…am I correct in thinking your boys have your fathers mouth? I see a resemblance!

This reminds me of when I was a girl on my grandparent’s farm. I now live on a small piece of property and long for the farm life.

This is a lovely story for Memorial Day. Did it feel like coming home when you moved back or was it a gradual thing?

I wish someone were living in the Crooked House now. It’s sad that it is empty.

Thanks for posting this photo, Suzanne. They look like good country folk – and I mean that with the utmost respect. Reminds me of looking at photos with my Grandma of her family. She was born in the late 1800’s – and I loved looking at family photos with her. Back then everyone in the family lived on farms. Hope you had a good Memorial Day. I love old cemeteries. :pinkpig:

I’m thinking red shoes, “there’s no place like home” ~ sweet! Very sweet remembrances I’m sure. Life does have a way of coming full circle doesn’t it!
