What an interesting bird. I’m infatuated too because I keep looking the pictures trying figure out it’s legs.

I’ve lived in the south all my life and these birds never cease to be amazing. Did you get close enough to realize how tall he actually is? 3′ isn’t uncommon. If he flew, you got a glimpse of an incredible wingspan. In still waters, they will “march” in place on those long stilt legs to stir up whatever they can to eat. We had one here that used to “fish” in our pond. I timed him one day, he stood in the same spot and watched nearly perfectly still for just over 2 hours. I hope you get to see some egrets and pelicans while you’re on vacation.

I wonder what it feels like to have your knees on backwards? I guess it would be worth it to be able to fly, don’t you think?

Oh, what beauty. It looks as though it is a clumsy bird, with it’s stick legs going in different directions, but I know it is not clumsy at all. I watch a great blue heron that lives near a pond by my house. I love watching these creatures; thanks for the look.

We get great blues here in Ohio, they’re interesting both on land, wading in the pond, and really weird to watch fly. Where do all those extra joints fit while their wings are working?

I added puzzles and included one of the Heron pics, so I thought I’d re-post the link here.

    err…. is that right?

Er…hope you don’t mind, but my field guide identifies this as a Snowy Egret – golden feet, black bill. It is smaller than a Great Egret (yellow bill, all black legs).

Thanks for the marvelous pictures! I wish I had some this nice.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
