Twig Stars and Teenagers

Dec
23

Because teenagers, especially male teenagers, like nothing better at holiday-time than making crafts, I got them to make one more finishing touch for our tree–twig stars.

At least this involved a hot glue gun.

That’s almost like a tool.

That’s right, making twig stars is a macho craft.

Ross made a giant star.

He said his star was the biggest because he is a star.

They each hung their star on the tree. Then I said, “Let’s make popcorn ball snowmen!” And they all ran away.

P.S. You can find my post on how to make twig stars here.

I think Ross just wanted to get his crafting assignment over with so he made one huge star instead of three little ones… Glad your kids get these times with you and each other. They’ll cherish them forever (give ‘em a few years…)

Yeah, I can just hear him when he gets back to the Navy. “What did you do on Christmas Vacation?” “I made twig stars and paper angels with my mom”. However, I think our kids do appreciate those “homey” touches after they’ve been gone, my college son surprises me when he comes home too.

I hope you have some power tools for those boys to work with after all this crafting. Maybe they need to go build a bonfire outside. Burning stuff and using loud, dangerous power tools might bring back some smiles!

I don’t know, Ross, the tool is pink! Let out the feminine side, eh?

I’m with Pat, Jenny, and Carmen—pink glue gun + sailor tats ≠ compute. You must be a great mom, or have magnificent powers of persuasion, or a monstrous stash of cookies!!! OH wait, you have all three!

I tried to find the large grapevine star in the craft stores. They didn’t have them this year. Thanks to your wonderful instructions I made a large star myself from grapevine and put it on the top of my tree. I also have several smaller ones. I also did the gingerbread people. My tree is so cute. Thanks for all your ideas. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
