I Have Issues

Did you know, when you use the blue salt in bread, with an egg, it turns it slightly green? Not BRILLIANT green, mind you, but juuuuuust enough for me to want to dye our daily bread some funky-monkey colors?

I think this Easter’s egg-scapades have warped my sense of “normal” colored foods.

Whatever. Bring it, Bunny.

I used the blue salt, some dark blue Wilson’s cake dye, and a dash of the Wilson’s violet dye. The violet kept the blue from turning greenish.

This is so pretty, it makes me wish I had been a hippie with my parents. How much cooler would that have been? Psychedelic even.

How sad is it this is as adventurous as I get?

Oh well. Like I said, Bring it, Bunny.

…and bring some butter while you are at it, because we are all out.

Someone needs to revoke my food coloring privileges, before my kids start thinking this is normal!

I love it! I need to make this! My family would look at me like I have lost my mind.

Suzanne, have you tried making rainbow bread? It’s popular a lot of countries but hasn’t seemed to catch on here (don’t know why).

I made a batch with my kids earlier this year – here’s a link to a blog post about it with pictures:

If all of your colorful antics in the kitchen are same in the rest of your life, (which they must be-its you). Your life must be very full. I love the bread. I wonder if BO would stop eating bread if I did that??????

  6. Larissa says:

I dunno. Probably not. I made the green bread (in dinner roll form) and it was a huge it when the ‘rents were here. Variety is the spice of life?

I say, “bring on the PINK butter”!!!!

@Larissa: Don’t stop on your kids’ account. They may roll their eyes now, but when they’re older, they’ll remember the blue bread with immense fondness. And they’ll recognize that mom wasn’t just a mom, she was a person. I know. I have great memories of purple gravy on orange mashed potatoes. My dad was in a funky mood one day and…well… he said it just happened!

When my kids were little, I used to buy rainbow beead for them from the local bakery when I didn’t have time to bake. They thought it was so special they even ate the crusts!

  12. Nerosmom says:

I still remember when my stepdad made green sugar cookies for St. Patrick’s Day…I feel bad because I just couldn’t eat them. They really looked like play doh. Yuck! What does a 12 year old know? But sweet of him to go to so much trouble for us.
