A Recipe For Someone Who Is Picky & Never Had Beans Before

Jan

Okay, so I never had beans growing up and the only beans that I’ve come into contact with are in like chili or re-fried beans. I hate chili and re-fried beans, although I am getting better at eating spicy food without gagging.

Does anyone have a recipe that I can trick myself into eating beans? Hopefully–as a jumping off point…

So, are we talking about never eating baked beans even? That might be where I’d start. They are typically sweet, not at all spicy unless you make them that way, and very veratile.

I’ve never eaten beans, ever. I’m worried about baked beans because I’m not terribly fond of sweet marinades on my meats and whatnot.
(I am also 12 wks pregnant so it is kind of hit or miss what I can eat without feeling sick anyway lol)

  3. Ross says:

I would start with a soup with meat and onion, celery, carrots and a few beans. Beans without seasoning are rather bland and not to be avoided. Taste, texture and appearance are stong factors. Succatash made with baby lima beans and sweet corn is also a good start.
Nancy and I have a comment that we sometimes make concerning the appearance of a plate full of food, “Do I eat this or did I?”
A plateful of baked beans or chili can fit that question.
As saw stated in the Texas Chili recipe blog the beans extend the more costly food.
Remember that many of our foods are modern versions of foods that kept people alive during the winter.

Kelly, what do you hate about the chili and refried beans? The texture? Or just the spice/heat? And what flavors do you like or are you craving?

  5. Laura Newton says:

I just posted a black bean brownie recipe for you. Very good and fudgy

  6. kellya says:

    ooh brownies?

I think ultimately I am going to have to hid stuff in foods, ( things that I have a hard time eating) and get myself used to them. If that makes sense

I will post a cake recipe called ‘Apple Surprise Cake’ that has lentils in it, but is very good, and you cannot taste the lentils at all.
