Created to be not too sweet yet very flavorful.

Difficulty: Easy

Servings: 15

Ingredients

6 c washed and cleaned navy beans
2/3 c molasses (I use Grandma’s brand)
1 1/2 tsp dry mustard powder
1/2 lb cut up pieces thick smoky bacon
2 c brown sugar
1/3 c white sugar
3/4 tbsp onion powder
pinch black pepper
Tones brand soup bases: 1 1/2 tsp chicken and 1 1/2 tsp beef
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes.

Directions

Makes a large batch. Can be halved, or you may need two crock pots depending on size of crock.
Soak cleaned beans 8 hours. Rinse. Place in crock pot with Tones and water covering beans by 1 1/2 “. Cook 8 hours on high or until very tender.
Mix sugars, molasses, mustard, onion, garlic, pepper. Add 1 cup of cooking liquid, stir and pour back into crock. Mix. Place bacon on top. Cook 8 hrs low. Now, stir in the bacon and continue 1 hour until eating…
Bacon adds enough salt to the recipe. This is sweet but not too sweet. Once sugars are added, the skins on the beans won’t soften anymore.

First of all, I am not much of a bean lover, matter of fact, I HATE beans. It’s a short story that started from childhood. HOWEVER, these beans have been cooking now for the duration of time. Company coming and I know that they will truly appreciate their childhood memories revisited. The fragrance here in my kitchen is awesome. It smells so good and the beans have thickened up so nicely. I can make a great pot of beans in any form or fashion, but with a recipe like this one, it will be truly a remarkable dish that will serve my company well. Thank you for this fabulous recipe. It is truly one of a kind. Hugs to you….

This is my fifth time of making these beans, did I tell everyone, I HATE BEANS. No one can understand how a bean hater can make such fabulous beans. Well, the secret is the recipe. This is awesome and I love making these beans for company. I made a triple batch on Friday for a lady who had a graduation party to provide the beans for. Everyone raved and raved about HER beans. She immediately called me after the festivities to tell me HER BEANS were a hit. Now I have two other friends of hers wanting ME to make them THEIR BEANS for two different gatherings. I am glad to do it but I gave them the site here and told them………go CHECK IT OUT. YOU will Love not only the bean recipe but the whole family of friends. This is such a homey place to be any time of the day or night. THANK YOU all for being part of this capsule of fun, love and great cooking.

These are so yummy! Beans are one of the few things that I usually think taste better store-bought, because I’ve never found a home-made recipe that I like…until now!
I think I haven’t enjoyed homemade beans before because most recipes I’ve seen from family or family friends include ketchup or barbecue sauce or the like.
As a side note, in regards to the soup base: I didn’t have Tones brand, but I didn’t think that would matter. I also only had beef base. (I was too lazy to go to the store just for chicken base.) They still turned out just fine!
