Cookies are rolled in crushed cornflakes and then topped with a quarter of, or moon shaped piece of a maraschino cherry, thus the term “wink.” Since it is rolled in cereal, it could even be classified as a “breakfast cookie”.

Difficulty: Easy

Servings: 30-36

Prep Time: 20 minutes   Cook Time: 10-12 minutes

Ingredients

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup pecans, chopped
1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
1/3 cup maraschino cherries,chopped
2 1/2 cups crushed cornflakes cereal
10 maraschino cherries, quartered

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease baking sheets.
2. Cream the shortening with the sugar. Blend in the eggs, milk and vanilla.
3. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in the chopped pecans, chopped dates and 1/3 cup chopped maraschino cherries.
4. Shape teaspoonful sized chunks of dough into balls. Roll each ball in the crushed corn flakes. Place the balls on the prepared baking sheets and top each cookie with 1/4 maraschino cherry.
5. Bake at 375 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool completely before storing in airtight containers.

Aaaaahhhhh….. This brings back some memories! It had to be in the early to mid 50’s when Mom made these because we moved from the house where she made them in 1956.

CORRECTION—-add 1 cup of chopped pecans to the list of ingrerdients

  3. Pete says:

Added the pecans to the list! And they STILL sound wonderful!

(Am wondering just how they would be made with something other than the cherry on top. Had an overload deal some years ago with maraschino cherries and cannot even look at them now!)

  4. Sharon mommafox says:

Actually,I wondered the same thing, so I put a chocolate star on each one right after they came out of the oven. I think I liked them even better than the ones with the cherries. Just saying, Chocolate does rule!

  5. Pete says:

Was thinking about dried cranberries, you know, to stay with the fruit theme and perhaps even be able to call it healthy, what with the fruit and cereal. But, HEY, the chocolate sounds sooooo much better!! Besides, you wouldn’t make these too often, so they’d be “special” enough that you wouldn’t really need to justify anything about them. Yeah. I’m sticking with that story!

A dark chocolate Hershey’s Kiss maybe? Oh, that just sounds disgusting! Besides, there are none of those around. Don’t know where they went…

  6. Sharon mommafox says:

They all dissapeared from here too????????hmmmm
