Okra help?

May
10

Hi everybody – I’m in need of a recipe for fried okra. I lost my mom 4 years ago and have been trying every summer since to make fried okra like hers. No such luck! I’ve tried several different recipes and they just aren’t right. I helped her make it many times and I know that she used flour and cornmeal, salt and pepper. I believe an egg wash too. Mine just never taste right. I’ve given up on trying to make them healthy because that doesn’t seem to be an option – baked some once and they were like cardboard. Yuck! I figure it’s not something we eat all the time so the oil to fry them is fine – but they still just don’t taste like Mom’s. Any help would be appreciated.

Jerseymom, So sorry that you lost your mom. I lost mine, too and though it has been a long time, I still miss her so much. It’s my grandmother’s recipes that I am always trying to recreate, though, as she was the best cook! Anyway, I am posting a recipe for fried okra which I hope you can use. It’s good to know that someone in Jersey cooks Southern!

Fran, thanks! My grandma was a good cook too but not quite as adventurous as Mom was. I’m actually a transplant to NJ – born in Oklahoma, live in Texas, Arizona, and Hawaii before coming east. I am in SOUTH Jersey though :) A far cry from north Jersey in lots of ways.

I have a recipe for fried okra and fried green tomatoes. I do them both the same way. I am going to post the recipe. Hope this will help you.
