Years ago (like maybe 35?) I had a yellow squash side dish at a chain restaurant called “Dixie House” that was out of this world. It tasted like it was only yellow cheese, squash and soda crackers, but putting that together in a pan and baking it at home did NOT produce the same (or even similar) result!
Somehow that restaurant managed to make the dish crunchy and creamy and heavenly. Am guessing it is a southern specialty, but have never seen it quite like that one. Managed to sneak a peak at an unbaked pan of the casserole and it LOOKED like it was only slices of the squash with shredded cheese and crackers, too!
