Apple and Pear Scones

(Makes 8 Scones)

2 1/2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup cold butter

1/2 cup diced Golden Delicious apple

1/2 cup diced Bosc pear

2/3 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Stir flour, baking powder, soda, salt, 1/4 cup sugar and brown sugar together.  With pastry blender, cut in butter until coarse crumbs form.  Stir in fruit.  Stir in buttermilk just until dough holds together.

Transfer dough to ungreased cookie sheet.  Shape into 9" round.  With floured knife, cut round into 8 wedges; sprinkle with rest of sugar.  Separate wedges 1/2".

Bake 22-28 minutes or til golden brown.

Oh, yum!  I LOVE scones – ANY kind of scones.  These sound particularly good.

Wonder how difficult it would be to make scone mix, kinda like a biscuit mix.  Then add whatever fruit you might want (like currents, canberries, nuts, etc) when the liquid is added.  Hmmm.

I love scones.  I've posted several recipes for scones…they are scattered in breakfast and quick breads.  This recipe is wonderful…but this recipe…  http://tinyurl.com/yfb5lpm  is my favorite.

Yes, a scone is basically a biscuit.  I was so fascinated about scones when I was a teenager and reading English novels that spoke of scones.  Then I finally figured out, after making a recipe for them, that they're biscuits!  (LOL)  I need to figure out a nice scones recipe from my Quick Mix.

Clover made me do it.

MMmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!   Scones and biscuits and muffins!  Each is Theobroma!!  Honey, jam and butter only make them better.

Edible, adj.: Good to eat, and wholesome to digest, as a worm to a toad, a toad to a snake, a snake to a pig, a pig to a man, and a man to a worm. ~Ambrose Bierce
