Fruit 'Leathers'

I've just seen this on a UK gardening programme and HAD to share it – though I bet you sweet people  already know!

I know this is not really the season for it – but I may forget before Autumn – Fall.

Once you have picked your favourite soft fruit (she showed it with plums but any will work), sieve it to rid all pits/seeds and skins. when pureed add confectioners sugar to taste.  (The colour wasn't very inviting at this point!)

Then spread out in a thin even layer on a non stick baking tray (or your dehydrator shelf) and place in a low oven (with the fan part on if you have one) for about 8 hours or until slightly tacky to the touch.  (Sorry – no idea of time in a dehydrator)

Then peel off the sheet (it will be flexible) and tear into strips and store in an airtight container.  Will last for months.  Giving you an intensly fruit flavoured snack when you want one – though I'm sure you will find other uses too!  (It turned out to be a deep rich plum colour).

My mouth is watering as I type this out.

LOL!! You don't have this in the UK, Rose? Here, commercially, it's called fruit rollups, but the homemade is soooo much better! You will have to try it, it is some good stuff.

Oh, making it with those currents would be just heavenly, Rose!

Yes, the dehydrators usually come with a shelf liner just for making the leathers.  Not that it's popular on this side of the pond or anything!

Fruit Rollups definitely aren't just in the health food shops, though, around the candy aisle…..kids love them!

I'm afraid it'd be all the sugar laden stuff in the candy aisles here Bug Eyed  Considering that schools are putting bans on the type of foods and drink that children can take for lunch in the UK I'm surprised that some enterprising company hasn't jumped on the bandwagon!  If my daughter was still at school now she'd have been starving. They can't take cordials, crisps, and even some types of sandwich filling - it makes my blood boil Grrr

(SORRY – I'm going off topic now).
