This is from my high school cookbook, so I'm pretty sure it came from the oatmeal box.
No Bake Cookies
2 cups sugar
1 stick butter
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup cocoa
3 cups oatmeal
In a large saucepan combine sugar, butter, milk, and cocoa. Brint to a FULL boil (cannot be stirred down) over medium heat, stirring frequently. Boil at a FULL boil for three full minutes, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and stir in the oats. Drop the mixture by tablespoonfuls onto waxed paper.
If using old fashioned oats, cool mixture in saucepan for 5 minutes.
Yield: 3 dozen

Sounds like the same recipe I have used in the past, except mine has the addition of 1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. An additional instruction is to make sure to start timing when mixture reaches a Full rolling boil; this is the trick to succesful cookies. If you boil too long the cookies will be dry and crumbly. If you don't boil long enough the cookies won't form properly. Hope this is a help. I have made them many, many times when I was working. The wet behind the ears 20-30 yr. old co-workers always asked for them. Have also substituted chow mein noodles for the oatmeal.

In my family these are Tummy Ticklers and have been for years.
Yep, we add creamy peanut butter and a tsp. of vanilla too. And we boil TWO minutes.
We use quick/minute oats.
And if you eliminate the cocoa, you have peanut butter no-bakes.
Any way you look at it, it's a classic and wonderful and easy cookie -
hey anyone got a cold glass of milk ???
dede
in a hotel room craving these cookies LOL!

Thanks mommafox for the bringing up the boiling instructions………..that is completely what makes the cookie set up right! I went in and edited the recipe. I use whatever oatmeal I have and they've always worked. I've sometimes added a cup of peanut butter……sometimes I don't have it and skip it……… This is a really versatile recipe!

Alanna's No Bake Chocolate Cookies
2 cups granulated sugar
1 stick butter
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup evaporated milk
3/4 cup peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla
3 cup oatmeal
I add about 1/4 cup chocolate chips to the hot mixture
Mix sugar, butter, cocoa, evaporated milk and cook over low heat until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat and add the 1/4 cup chocolate chips ,vanilla and peanut butter. Stir in the 3 cups oatmeal, one cup at a time. Spoon out onto wax paper. Cool and eat. Yield 14 lg. cookies or you can make them small.
I sometimes put a piece of marchino cherry on top or sprinkles on top.
By adding the evaporated milk and the chips it makes a richer cookie! Enjoy!

My mom cut down on the oatmeal and added cheerios. I remember, as a kid, that mom would thoroughly wash the drainboard (countrified term for countertop), then she'd butter the drainboard and drop the no-bake cookies on the buttered drainboard. Her thinking was, "wax paper costs money, why waste it?" And those cookies were sure a treat.
