Made these for breakfast. OH MY GOSH they are so good. Very light and flaky. I cut the recipe in half and it made five big biscuits.

Sourdough Buttermilk Biscuits
2 cups of all purpose flour
1 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 cup of butter or margarine
1/2 cup of buttermilk
1 cup of sourdough starter
Melted butter
Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Using a pastry blender or fork, cut in butter until mixture resembles cornmeal. Mix together buttermilk and starter with a fork, stir mixture until a soft dough is formed that cleans the sides of the bowl. Turn out onto floured surface and knead gently for 30 seconds. Roll dough to form a circle 1/2 inch thick. Cut biscuits with round cutter. Place in lightly greased baking pan with sides touching. Brush tops with melted butter. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes. Bake at 425ºF. for 12 to 15 minutes. Makes 12 to 15 biscuits.

They DO look wonderful. But, I've got a dumb question. (What? Another dumb question??) If you are using sour dough starter, why the baking soda and baking powder? Is guessing that there is less soda and powder than the usual biscuit recipe be in the neighborhood of correct?

Good memory Georgia! I have an admission. My starter was too scary so I bought some from King Arthur flour. I followed the directions and have had it going for two weeks now. It is wonderful. I even started some for a friend from mine.

I was wondering the same thing myself. Maybe some starters don't rise much. I didn't want to fool with it on my first try so I followed the directions except for cutting the recipe in half. I think the baking soda and powder may just help the starter. All I know for sure is that they were wonderful. And, my chickens just got the extras as an afternoon treat and they give them six thumbs up as well.

I tried doing my owner starter from Suzanne's recipe and it flopped. I think its still too cold here or at least my kitchen it.
I got the link to King Arthur's flour sourdough starter and I just purchased it. I will use it along with my amish starter.
Those biscuits look delicious – can't wait to try my own.
