Veggie Garden & Scarecrow

Here's something fun –

not exactly a recipe, but …….

The base is a slab of green styrofoam covered with leaf lettuce and held in place with U pins. The fencing can be bought at craft stores such as AC Moore or Michael's. Attach it with U pins also. The veggies speak for themselves LOL  – well, the 'corn stalks' are green onions sliced and curled in ice water. They are a bit tricky to finish – you slide a wooden skewer up inside the onion and attach a baby corn. Thought this was a good time to share this – the scarecrow and crows are easy to find this time of year.

I keep all the non-edible parts in a shopping bag hung in the basement for the next garden :)

Little washtubs or wheelbarrows are fun to add to – good for dips if they are food safe.

You'll need:

1 green foam board 17 7/8"  X  11 7/8"  X  5/16"

wooden fencing 60" long  X 2 1/2" high (I use less by using on the front and sides only)

U pins from the floral department

That must be about the most adorable thing EVER!

Trying to think of ways to make the whole thing edible – like maybe using up some of that box mix stuff we used to use before making Suzanne's cornbread mix.  Or doing it in a long cake pan with a cream cheese dip of some sort for the base.  Come on – somebody out there has to have a brilliant idea or three!

Wouldn't dip in a miniature washtub be just too cute?

This was originally in Taste of Home if I recall correctly. I think. Maybe LOL.

I have the page and the dimensions, materials list if anyone wants specifics.

It IS impressive and fun.

I would probably use 2 sheets of styro and go from there. Imagination is all you would need.

This is totally cute!  Away with those boring old veggie platters!  And Georgia, great idea for the GF Party!!  They can be as big or as small as you need…………oh the possibilities……..

I added the materials list to the post – then decided to see if I could find the original idea online – and I did   http://www.tasteofhome.com/rec…..ble-Garden#

I think I like my version better ;)

I even have a little metal washtub that would be perfect for the dip!  Maybe I'll dye the dip blue so it looks like water?

Uh…I'm not so sure I want to eat anything blue — unless it's blueberries!  Imagine blue dip on orange carrot strips, or green celery stalks.  I think I'd go for a tub with waves and whitecaps.

I filled mine with spinach dip LOL. The only blue food I ever served that was a huge hit was for a Dr. Suess Birthday Party. Blue jello with red gummy fish (one fish, two fish….).

I wonder how Pickled Brussels Sprouts would go?  They are pretty good, I used to pickle green beans, (Dilly Beans) and down one side, put a couple sprouts, a garlic clove, and a couple small cauliflour flourettes… just to add an interesting look, then some people liked the sprouts so much, I just made the sprouts seperately.

I've even heard of using frozen sprouts for this, though I used fresh and cooked them a little in the pickling brine.  Hmmmmmm…

If tomatoes are a fruit, then isn’t ketchup technically a

smoothie?
