I am about to begin a new journey and I just wanted to share. Four about 5 years we have been working towards being self-sustaining. Each year we get a few more things scratched off the list. There is always uncertainty when you are about to take a step that will cause major change and nervousness too. I have decided to take the plunge…first step. I made a choice to step down from my full time salaried position with all the bennies and income. I am taking a position with less responsibility only 40 hrs a week in an area where I will have lots of fun playing with fabric all day. Same company, just transfered so still very stable. Just less….time and money. I have been working towards this first step for quite sometime, but fear always keeps you from taking it. It is natural to ask yourself all the what ifs and am I ready? will we make it and so on. I think it would be a tough choice in 5 years when you are even closer to being ready. Initial blow would still be a blow whenever you did it. I am very happy with this and excited for the extra time to concentrate on the farm.
I know that we get caught letting life happen to us and chose paths for us. I decided to make the path for myself and finally take one step onto it. Anyone thinking about this or think I am just batty? Has anyone done this or have any insight?

OfflineBirdi: Gave up staff job bennies & salary advancement more than 20 years ago. Managed to go out on my own, scare up work, get mortgage, and generally look after myself. Never made it to the 1 %, but then that would have been an unreal expectation. Lots of ups and downs, but at least they were MY ups and downs and not controlled by office politics or circumstances. All in all glad to have done it. Good luck to you. You sound like you already have a viable plan and that's half the battle.

OfflineYay, Birdi! Good for you! How exciting, even if there is some nervousness.
Some choices for me that were huge steps: becoming full time mommy at home, homeschooling, and moving the children and I to the cabin/farm while dh finishes out his AF career. All of those choices were not what anyone, including myself, would have thought that I'd choose. Add in chickens and the cows…..well, sometimes I look in the mirror and wonder who that person is!

Offline33 years ago I set out to repair houses and Nancy quit her government job to work with me. We recognised the need for health insurance and bought the best we could afford. After about five years Nancy's back went bad and she needed some hospital time and therapy. The insurance covered that. In '99 she was diaganosed with breast cancer the insurance saved our house. In '07 I had surgery and in '10 I had back and hip surgery each time the insurance was ther for us. Our savings are intact and we have our health. Please don't neglect the need for health insurance.
