Cleaning Ironstone

The white ironstone dishes I got at the garage sale have those gray "dishwasher marks" on them. At least I think it is from a dishwasher. Is there anything that will take those marks off? I tried bk soda and Softscrub. I only gave a dollar for a whole basket of dishes and all of the soup bowls have those ugly marks. Someone told me it was from the dishwasher…I use a dishwasher all the time and none of my dishes have those marks.

Anyway…if you have a cleaner that will work please share!

Well, there is another possible explanation.  Sometimes the surface glaze can have very small cracks (not always visible) in it and moisture can get underneath the glaze.  Sort of like crazing, but not in the typical crazing pattern.  The cracks might come from wear, perhaps a default in the glaze itself, age, or any number of other causes, of course including a dishwasher.  (Perhaps from temperature variations or the chemicals in the  washing powder?)

Before eating from them, I would want to make sure that it is a surface thing and not an issue with the underlying pottery itself.  Either way, you got yourself a good deal, so it's not like you are really out anything.

Perhaps try soaking one to see if the grey streak increases in width?  If it does, you will know that the glaze is no longer preventing contamination of the porous clay underneath.

Worst case scnario, you have some great matching saucers for potted plants!  Maybe some pieces for interesting matching yarden art?

IF nothing else works, try using a "magic eraser".  I have used one to clean up corning ware dishes from the thrift store.  My only complaint is that it may leave the glazed "shiny" look a little dull.

I hope some one knows a solution.  I have a set of Phaltzgraff dishes that have those marks.  I never put them in a dishwasher; I thought it was from silverware.  I even tried their cleaner to no avail.

I've thought the marks were from silverware, too.  My bowls especially have them in the bottom.  The magic eraser didn't work on mine…haven't found anything to work.

I would try some non-abrasive cleaner….Bon Ami or Barkeeper's friend.

Also you could try making a light paste with Cream of Tartar (yes the one you bake with) and let it sit a bit, then scrub

Good Luck!!

Magic eraser and cream of tartar didn't work. Someone at school suggested tooth paste…that has worked the best…but these bowls are really bad.
