OfflineOkay – I know this doesn't sound "farm-like" but on the forum topics it says that "anything goes" here in this category so…here goes!
I need to replace my ailing printer. I want to get a color laser WIRELESS printer. I'll be using it for home and small "home business" use. I also do graphic design, so having one that prints reasonable comps would be great.
So, I'm asking YOU for recommendations and experiences … Who uses a wireless color laser? Do you like it, recommend it, or hate it and wish you could throw it out the window? Do you like how it prints photos? Is it easy to use or a pain? Anyone have an "all in one"? Like it or wish you just got a printer only?
Your input is greatly appreciated! I'm hoping to get this replace quickly, but I hate just buying something without any "real-person" input!
I have a Brother HL 4040-CN. I love it. It's not wireless, but it's networked in with my router.
I use it a lot…photos, brochures, everyday printing, fabric.
I've had it for 3 years and just had to replace my first toner cartridge (during all the printing for the Retreat). There are some that say they run out of ink fast, but do some googling, there are ways to trick the printer to get thousands of pages of more print out of a cartridge. Mine hasn't done this…it truly ran out of it…but my girlfriend bought a 3070 and had this problem. After some googling, it's a well known problem with all sorts of printers, not just Brother.

OfflineWe bought an HP wireless printer, copier, scanner. We didn't need a fax. It is a inkjet also. I would have loved to have had a laser but it wasn't in our budget. For what we do it has been a workhorse. It is also compatible with our computers.
We have tried to use those refill places and I am not sure that they are worth it for my particular printer. It seems need refilling more often and the price is not that much different. This is just my experience.

OfflineCindy- A guy once told me about the kits you can get to work around the system that let you override the "empty" message the printer gets from the toner. He told me you can buy the kits on ebay and sure enough, for the printer he was telling me about, I did find them there.
I know that the initial layout for the laser is high, but the print cost (toner vs ink jet) is not even comparable. That's where they get you on the ink jet – the incredible high price for the ink cartridges and how few prints you get from them.

OfflineI have found internet sources for ink cartridges to have much better prices than you can get at your local "department" store. Just use your search engine and do a little investigation and you will be suprised what is out there. When I had an Epson printer I was able to purchase black cartridges for around $2.00. I currently am able to get high yield cartridges for less than what the department store charges for regular cartridges. Hope this might help.![]()

OnlineTOTALLY happy with it, no danger of ink running when printing out things at home, even when printing ink heavy things, and it's a MUST imo for labels or envelopes because of the danger of them getting exposed to the elements when being sent/delivered!
If you go to a full service computer store, they usually have people very willing to print out samples on the various printers.
I do like the Epson very much and I'm not affiliated with them in any way! ![]()

OfflineSorry, Leah's Mom–finally had a minute to answer your question! I talked to our printer tech today and he said he prefers the Brother wireless printers to the HP ones as the Brother printers don't seem to lose the wireless connection to the computer as easily (he couldn't recommend a specific model). He added, though, that getting them serviced can be a problem; for example, we're in a city of about 100,000 people here and there's no one in this area who works on them.

OfflineThanks – that's helpful from a tech person! Have you seen how well they handle photos? We have a Dell at work and it does really well for printing in-house sales sheets, brochures, etc. that are high enough quality that they can go to out to customers. It is pretty close – if not the match for – the quality of print I get on the color lasers at a Kinkos that have the RIP to CMYK.
I'd love to find that quality in an "all in one" type that I can also use for scanning w/a doc feed but not sure the quality of their lower-end, home-office priced models!
I will definitely check out the Brothers.

OfflineI thought I'd update and say that I did buy a Brothers, all-in-one, Color Laser MCF-9325CW. Wireless. Loving it! It's so nice not to have to be tied to the printer.
I waited and waited until I could get a good deal. When I first saw them – $499. Got mine for $350 (Best Buy Sale on-line) plus an additional rebate from ebates.com
So far it's working great and scanning well. I got one w/a doc feed that is wonderful 'cause I have to scan stacks of docs on a regular basis and they don't have to be image quality so the doc feed works well for that. (I was having to do them 1 page at a time on a flat bed.)
I haven't experimented with image scanning very much but what I have done looks as good as my flat-bed scanner.
Thanks for all the input!

OfflineThis is just an FYI regarding printer ink.
I don't know how many of you live near a Walgreens and all Walgeens don't offer this service but I recently tried their ink cartridge refill service and I am very happy with the results so far.
I have an HP PSC 1410v all in one ink jet printer. (not wireless) I had been paying about $39. for the Color and B/W cartridge in a budget pack at Walmart. (both for that price) I finally took my cartridges to Walgreens and had them fill them. It's a drop off service and takes an hour or two depending on how many are ahead of you so don't think you can pop in and out.
Bottom line $12.99 each. Savings of over $10

Offlineanother FYI regarding printer ink, both jet and laser: check your print settings. Most offer a draft b/w. This setting uses far less ink than normal and is perfectly acceptable for mss drafts. Then for most letters, photo selection etc. I use "fast" or "draft" quality. Finally, if I need higher quality printing, I choose photo paper, or plain paper best quality. Saves boocoo ink.
Also, I save on ink by using a service that routes faxes to my fax number to my email. This means I have an electronic version of the fax as well as save ink (and paper) by not having to print out every multi-page fax I receive. (I send fax from 'puter too, so I never print a fax I send.)
