OfflineI checked in with the Charleston Daily Mail, July 4th edition.
Appalachian Power Company estimates that it will be Sunday Night before Roane county power is restored.
More than 5,000 Roane county residents are still without power. (Most WV counties have upwards of 1,000 w/o power. One county has more than 14,000 without.
Let's pray that Suzanne, any of her kids at home, and Clover, BP, Glory Bee, Patriot and all the critters are managing.

OfflineWe got hit with the northern edge of this latest storm, the one we are now calling "The Noon Storm." It was a mini version of the one last Friday (the first in the series). Based on what we got here, Suzanne and Roane Co in general may not have had more than a bit of rain from it.
So far, we have around 6000 additional outages in my county today. Some of these had been out before, restored, and out again. It's crazy – they got around 20K restored (in my county) yesterday, were looking for around 15K today, and now this! (Please don't quote me too widely on those numbers – I may not be remembering the correct ones from earlier in the day. The total number this morning without power had been reduced to 38K this morning and is now back up to 44K. Those numbers ARE correct because they just said so on the local radio station!)
Today's storm looks on radar to be picking up steam. It turned south from here near Charleston and may be turning south and west now, getting much larger than it was when it popped up here.
Our power blinked off briefly then returned. We lost our internet briefly as well. Everything else was uneffected.
But, our county 9-11 call center took a direct hit today from lightning. They had to move to a back-up location.
You have to laugh at all this! But, I am getting a bit tired of camping out at home. Yes, we have electricity, but I am beginning to have cabin fever! We have everything we need here, so I just haven't added to what is on the roads.
Those of you inclined to pray – our major issues here, beyond the obvious need for restoration of power in general, are oxygen for those needing it, ice for health and welfare issues, communication needs for entirely too many, and disposal of spoiled food. We continue to get additional repair crews, so that will take care of itself over time. All those crews away from their own homes and families are so appreciated by all of us here that we need to thank their families for letting us borrow them for a while.

OfflineWe were without power (and in my case also water since we have a well) for 52 hours, then back on for the night and the next day (graduation day in town) again for 8 hours…but reading this..why did I complain.
Compare to roan County…my trouble was nothing.
(but sure we will get a natural gas generator, because if this happens during our cold winters we would be in big trouble)

OfflineI'm in Tornado (Kanawha County). Our power was finally restored yesterday evening. Hoping everyone's is restored very, very soon.
The heat has been unbearable. The house was just as hot as outdoor temps, and with no air moving, we would wet towels to help cool ourselves, and it really helped. We put the tent up in the back yard and slept in it…it was so much cooler. I'm so grateful we had all of the camping equipment….and water, although we went without ice up until Tuesday.
I feel very lucky as I know our situation was much better than what so many others have had to endure.
And as Pete said, we are all thankful for the many power crews from other states.

OfflineSome of us remember the days before AC. I know people that still don't have or want AC. There is a contractor working on the roof of a house across rhe road today. The air temperature is about 95 degrees F and there is no shade on the roof.
I went to school at Kessler AFB in Biloxi Ms in 1960. There was no AC in our rented home and none in the offices or classrooms at the school. We marched to class at 5:30 am and marched back at 12:30pm and then worked outside for three more hours keeping the base tidy.
At that time women wore skirts in public and were never allowed shorts in public.

Offlineoh Ross, I'm not sure those were the good old days! Same vintage here, school did not have AC (few places did…actually I think it was just the movie theaters.) Nowadays they close schools when it gets this hot. But, like you, we endured…and wore wool gaberdine uniforms and nylon stockings to boot. The only action taken to keep classrooms cooler was to turn off the overhead lights. At home we were able to catch any weak breeze because the (older) buildings were designed so that open windows could provide cross-ventialtion. No such opportunity in new buildings.

OfflineWe didn't have air when I was a kid either…I hated summer! I spent a lot of time in the basement.
My husband and I didn't have airconditioning when we first married…we lived in a house with no attic and it had a metal roof! I just about died the summer child # 3 was born…never so miserable in all my life. I ended up weighing less the day I delivered her than when I got pregnant!
I am praying for anyone pregnant without electricity.

OfflineI too grew up without A/C, but at least we had fans! We didn't even have a fan running until we finally got a generator on Wednesday.
A front coming thru tomorrow may bring the same kind of storm….fill your vehicles and gas cans today if you can! I know this has been especially hard on those with tight budgets, thank goodness there have been cooling stations and places for folks to get meals.

OfflineWelll… not exactly the same thing, but our blower motor on AC went out during the night with a loud whine. AC folks can't get here until Thursday. I may move to Sister's! She is here after knee surgery, so it will take some effort to get her back to her house, but it might be worth it.
The good side is that it is only 85 today, down from 105, so count my blessings.
I do wish Suzanne could get online somewhere and let us know how she is is. And the little animals. She is probably doing just fine, hauling water from the creek for them and canning everything that was in the freezer.
