OnlineSince I got my puppy in June, I've become a much better walker… I've had to! He's very energetic and we live in a very small house.
This morning I got up and walked down our dead end road to a hay field, a bit down a treeline, around to a corn field and back to a tractor path, and back to the road.
No animals besides my mutt and I, but I enjoyed the brisk, fresh air and a good walk.
My New Years resolution is to SEE more on our walks and enjoy them more. The dog helps because he's very cheerful and happy when we're out there, but early on cold winter mornings I need to work at NOTICING things around me more too!
Healthy exercise for my body and mind!
Oh, I think all told it was about a mile and a half, though hopefully some hills and rough terrain made up for the less than my normal two miles.

OfflineDoes about 300 feet count? I walked down to the chickens and broke the ice on the water pans, poured boiling water in so they could get a drink. It was bright and cold. The four white pigeons flew off their high roost and walked up the pigeon steps so they could reach the water.
Papa Pijjie went into his flirty dance for a black banty hen that he is love with… it was very pleasant.
Dog followed all around, orange long haired cat followed him. We had a little caravan going on. Then I came in and filled two trash bags with clothes to donate to Goodwill, tomorrow. It has been a fine day. And the hens are laying again, which is the best part!

OnlineOf COURSE 300 feet count! Every step counts! I loved your description of your morning too FarmGrammy, I could totally picture your little parade, with the visual side shows added so thank you! My kitties sniffed at the snow just outside the door and looked at me with contempt so they stayed indoors.
Parking in the back of the parking lot counts, and so does walking to get the mail out of the mailbox or going over to visit a neighbor who needs to be checked on. it ALL counts!
(I'd love to hear more about your pigeons too, in another thread of course so we don't go off topic of course!)

OfflineJust came back from a mile walk. I usually start walking in March but you inspired me to start earlier. Besides it is nice with a little north breeze (which made it a bit chilly heading homeward).
Enjoyed watching the waterfowl swimming on the local retention pond.
I noticed last year that I didn't have the stamnia that I had the year before when I had been walking a lot. The hobby we do sometimes requires a lot of hiking.

OfflineI took a walk to do the chores as well. I watered the ducks and chickens checked for eggs, got their feed, cleaned up the piles left from cleaning up the coops & pen last week.
We will all go out later. It will be just below freezing. I would like to start serious walking again since the temps have been warm, and the kids have been asking about it. I will have to carry the youngest, as I don't have a good sled ready and for some reason we don't have a snowsuit for him. Oh well. That counts as weight bearing exercise when I have about 20 lb. extra to carry!
The last good walk we had was on Thanksgiving Day (Oct. here), when our car had a flat about 1/2 mile from home. Here I was, little one on my hip & 3 other kids walking through the scratchy canola stubble. It was the fastest way back home, and I did extra walking by backtracking a long way to try to find a lost sock (not found), and then back with my DH to fetch the car. That was quite a walk and quite enjoyable, believe it or not! I hope that our other walks will be much more comfortable.
I think that we will stick to the road.

OfflineI woke up this morning with planning on going for a walk after the milking chores were done. Unfortunately after the milking was done we realized that something was wrong with the water pipes! So my time was spent figuring out that problem. By the time that was done it was past time to start on school. I was really disappointed that I wouldn't get my walk in today. However, though we usually have therapy on Wednesdays I cancelled it as dd is still blowing and blowing and blowing; so this afternoon I went for my long desired walk! My plan was to start at just ten to twenty minutes, but I walked for 35 minutes!

OfflineI walked to my buck pen in my back field carrying water (yea – weight bearing like LK says) cleaned their pens and walked back. Cleaned the doe pens and carried water and hay for them. Later I took my four dogs out in the woods for a 20 minute hike wearing coveralls and heavy boots – more weight bearing :-) Then I made umpteen trips up and down the driveway from the barn to the workshop to get tools and lumber so I could make my new Pyrenees puppy a warm place in the doe barn without the goats getting in her "safe place". Then it was back out to the buck barn with water and back to do the girls. Just a typical day… rain, snow or shine.

OnlineI forgot to post yesterday that I got up very early yesterday and walked my full 2 miles,
but now I have to admit that today I overslept and didn't walk at all this morning
My dog is NOT happy with me! I will need to get out in a couple hours and get some serious walking in or the pup is going to eat things… like furniture, or a cat or two. He's got way too much energy!
Oh, BG, that was funny with the "cat or two"!
I have an aging Chessie mix that is going blind with cataracts but he is, and still remains an oversized sloppy/happy puppy, who lunges at things and people with abandon. All one has to do is slightly jingle his chain collar attached to the leash and he'll near knock anyone down standing between him and the gate with body-wagging excitement. This week and next I'm home alone with DH visiting family in MI … it's been a big shift of my gears to do the dog-walking since my joints are not friendly in the morning with the cold. But that ol' furry clown gets so bummed without a walk (all those lightpoles to mark!), I'm feelin' strongly motivated to stick with the morning ritual and, who knows, these two weeks might develop a better habit in a daily walk for ME!

OfflineI didn't have time to walk yesterday, but today I walked for an hour. Instead of walking towards the stop sign we decided to take the dirt road. It was a wonderful walk! I hadn't been as far back as we went today. We found some icicles still hanging (it's 61 today) and managed to bring one all the way home. It was a very thick one. Now I'm sitting on the porch watching the chickens and listening to the roosters. I love the country life.

OfflineUp to 70F here this afternoon. Didn't go for that "walk" but took son shopping so a little mall walking there and then we went to the park. More active than sitting at home, but my actual (beginner) walking goal is min. 30 minutes 5 days/week. Thanks for starting this thread. I also need to get some gold stars for my calendar to mark the days I meet my goal.
