I'm glad to hear that you all on the east side are okay.

I thought earthquakes were more of a danger out west …..

I think we hear more about the west coast ones but there are faults in midwest part of the country also.  Colorado had a couple (or more) yesterday.

We all learn to deal with nature in our own little corner of the country.

Boy, that's the truth. Just seeing a hurricane on TV scares the spit out of me, and if we ever got 2 inches of snow in the Los Angeles area, life would grind to a halt. We wouldn't know what to do and we wouldn't have the tools to do it.  We'd probably have to declare a disaster.

Early in December '09, we had measurable snow here in the foothill edge of the central valley of CA … something I can't remember happening since an equally unusual event in my CA childhood half a century ago.  In the end, the snow didn't last past noon (they delayed schools anyway, lol!), but there were a number of homes and businesses surprised by cracked pipes due to below-freezing temps.  What a mess!  Usually never happens here 'cause, hey, our water pipes travel into the house over the rafters in the garage … then along the ceiling and down through the walls (outside wall for the kitchen).  Imagine what can go wrong!

DH is a Michiganer and occasionally makes wistful noises about missing snow … after 10 years of MA winter experience I do not miss snow.  Shoveled too many drift loads dumped by blizzard nor'easters (another natural disaster) so I prefer sparkling frigid snow only on postcards.

Let's see, I have been through tornadoes (one actually went, or jumped over my house…odd experience feeling the walls of your house move inward like a deep breath being sucked in) a number of hurricanes, and this east coast earthquake will make the second I have felt here on this side of the states, and I live in SC.  I will have to say tornadoes probably scare me more, and the thought of severe flooding will make me panic.  However, so long as I and everyone else makes it thru ok, that will make me happy!

Liz Pike, I couldn't agree with you more!! Here in Phoenix, we have high winds, dust storms, flash floods, and, of course, the unrelenting heat – up to 116 the last few days. (Sorry to say this for most of you, but here we can hardly wait for winter to arrive!!). I lived in southern California for several years and I have to tell you, nothing scares me more than an earthquake! Would rather face almost any other nature force.

Not sure, but considering mommafox's description of the current state of the spring flooding in SW Iowa. . . . I think flooding might be the absolute worst.

The water is still surrounding our town. They just started letting less water out of the dams in South Dakota. Then there is the issue of HUGE breaches (holes) in the federal levees that also protect? our town and surrounding towns. They don't think the water will be back in the banks of the river before the end of the year, so guess I will be spending winter in my humble abode. It was a daycare so it really is NOT like home!  . . . Churches and organizations have tried to help with hot meals and food pantries for those that have been displaced or lost so much. But like all small communities, these churches and organizations are already running on a very thin budget.

It's too bad that one natural disaster (flooding) can't be used to alleviate another (drought areas).

Looks like here in eastern NC that's exactly what's about to happen. We've been in a severe drought all year. Now we've got Irene bearing down (tentatively set to make landfall 20 miles from me) with 16-17" rain forecast. Our grass will green up finally.  We've mowed the yard once since May.

Just caught the jaw-dropping space view of Irene after growing over the past two days … the chilling size of that thing looks to be as large as the infamous Katrina.  I will hope that warm waters do not stoke Irene into a monster of equal force.  For anyone on the east coast, either flee or please stock up, board up and stay safe.  Emphasis on stay safe and best wishes to everyone in Irene's path.

Irene has come and gone and now I must rake the yard. She shook the dead branches from my trees and dumped  about 6 inches of rain  and shut the lights off for a few hours. Some folks closer to the storm got beaten up a little more but as hurricanes go this one wasn't too bad.

My daughter at the head of the Chesapeake bay came thru ok too! Lost power but they have an automatic generator that took over. I am breathing a lot easier now!

Well, I see there was an earthquake near the Ohio/West Virginia border yesterday, in case folks there were feeling left out.  It was a 3.1, centered 18 miles ENE of Parkersburg, WV.  Anybody feel that one?

There was a 4.2 north of Los Angeles this afternoon, but it was about 50 miles away and I was grocery shopping, so I didn't feel it.

I feel the earth – move – under my feet

I feel the sky come tum-b-ling down – tum-b-ling down…
