OfflineHubster's got an Aunt (GI bride) and cousins in Colorado and his sister and family just last year emigrated to Atlanta but apart from that no links…only this web site! Its a beautiful day here too so tonight it will be a BBQ. So far I am thinking: corn on the cob, keilbasa kebabs, potato salad and tomatoes. Strawberries and cream for tea because we picked 5lb on Sunday! LOL x

OfflineHappy 4th indeed! Thanks for the good wishes Delbee, it sounds like you'll be having a great cook out! The kielbasa kebobs sound excellent and I think I'll have to copy that idea! I've been thinking that my menu was lacking something. I'm going to soak the bamboo skewers soon! Potato salad is already made, and the pie is yesterdays but still tasty.
Just as a reminder to all the CitR's in the US, be sure to get all your pets in early today so they don't get scared by neighbors with fireworks. Cats that run off, and dogs that go hide then get lost or run into a street because of the loud noises aren't at all unusual. We've had lots of people practicing around here but I expect it will be louder than ever tonight!

OfflineWe all had a great time and I am sure you all did too!. The kids got so enthused and creative. They downloaded and cut out flags, made menus, made placemats out of flags and Alastair even created an American play list on his ipod! Isn't it inspiring when kids get realy into stuff like that? We ended up having "Cowboy corn cobs", "Passadena potato salad", "Grand Canyon Kebabs" and "Texas tomatoes". Erin even had room for "Pittsburg pancakes" for pudding. We were still outside at 9pm with school in the morning!

OfflineLove the names and it sounds like such a grand group effort! That had to give a lot of satisfaction to you and add a lot of fun for them!
When I was a kid we had one "foreign food" night each month where we not only researched foods, colored flags, and helped (a little at least) cook it, but dressed up "in character" and learned to say words or phrases in the languages.
The best costumes were probably the Japanese Kimonos which was bathrobes with wide sashes tied in back, and we sat on floor pillows around a coffee table, but the food was FAR FAR FAR from accurate back then. Today we may have been able to do at least a little better. I'm sure our attempts at saying please, thank you, yes and no, or anything else we attempted would have horrified anyone who spoke the various languages too!
I suspect we had a lot of Italian nights too since dad was always in charge of the pizza making! Delicioso!
