OfflineOk I was not sure where else to ask something as silly as this then here!!!
About 3 days ago my lovely DD (3) hit me in her sleep in my right eye…I have the biggest shinner!!! Its not turning black or any other pretty colors just pink. Well the inside corner of my eye lid, (near the bridge of my nose) is so swollen that I look like I have gone 10 rounds in the ring!! It gets better through out the day so its not as bad at night but in the morning I can barely open it. I didnt know if any one has any idea on how to get the swelling to come down?
I know that part of the problem with sleeping is that I am a belly sleeper so I sleep on my face too. I have tried so hard to stay on my back or the other side but I always wake up in the same position!
Thank you all!!

OfflineIn all the old movies they put a steak on it! But that is probably just a way to apply damp cold.
Would the careful application of cold help? That is the usual treatment for swelling/inflamation.
I am so terribly over-reactive of any injury near or of an eye that I'd probably be off to the doc to have it checked out. (Perspective here – have torn a retina twice, so there is some rational thought behind that for me.)

OfflineI am going to give that a try, its just hard to find time to sit with ice on my eye while chasing my 3 year old…If it doent clear up or show any improvment by Monday I am going to call the dr. Oh well no Thanksgiving Pictures for me!!!

OfflineIf it helps – my surgeon a couple of years ago used a vinyl disposable glove filled with crushed ice to drape over the eye, with a barrier (a washcloth – it may have been double folded) to prevent too much chill directly on the area. Of course, I was lying in recovery at the time, so keeping it in place was relatively easy. No 3-year olds running about!

OfflineWell I have tried the ice, and then a warm compress. It has gone down quite a bit as of this morning! I am hopeful…haha.
Cassie, acually I had to use the same when I had my surgery done, how do I put it nicely, I felt I got the short end of the stick when it came to my bra size…haha. Frozen peas on one side and corn on the other…Everytime I pull out either of those (Even though they have been long trown away) My Dh asked if I was making dinner or freezing my ___. haha ![]()

OfflineMamaleigh, I woke up with my eye like that last week swollen, red and tender. After a couple of days I finally went to the doctor…I had a sty on the INSIDE of my eyelid! Doc told me to use a hot compress so that the stye would drain, she also gave me some eye drops to help prevent infection. It's all clear now. ;-) Are you sure your daughter hit you? lol

OfflineYeah I remember getting hit, it felt like my eye lid had folded in on its self when it happened. I can feel a little bump on the inside like a small bb. (that is the only way I can describe it) but it is much better today. Still a little sore if I rub it, and a little red/pink. But nothing like it was! You know the heat from the shower seemed to work the best and it would go down quite fast with that. Maybe I need to skip the ice and just do heat.

OfflineMy 3 year old is a very uumm active sleeper. She talks, moves, walks all in her sleep. She has gotten me before just not in the eye like this. She got my hubby one night in an area that was very sensitive for him. It was funny to me at the time not him though, so I guess paybacks for laughing at him got me this time!

OfflineHaving had waaaaay too many injuries over the years, I've lived through all that ice vs heat controversy! As a general rule, heat is to stimulate healing while ice is to reduce inflamation. With things like the muscular stuff which we characterize as "back trouble," ice is usually better because it reduces inflamation – what is usually causing the pain. Heat makes it feel better, though, but actually CAN slow the healing. So mostly, "they" recommend alternating heat and cold, ending with cold for typical strains, sprains and all that these days. (It may have changed again, but that's the last I read on the subject.)
Anyway! That moist heat from the shower is terrific. A washcloth heated in the microwave also works. That method can give some relief (I do that for sinus issues) but cools quickly enough that you don't cause a bunch of addtional inflamation.

OfflineAn old trick for a warm compress for the eye is to use a teabag dipped in warm (not too hot!) water. The tannic acid in the tea is soothing, along with the warmth. Works well for drawing a sty.
For a cool compress, even as you sleep, if you have a drugstore nearby you can get a cool-pack mask. They run about $5 and they're reuseable, like blue ice. There are lots of different models, but here's an example: http://www.amazon.com/Aquasent…..038;sr=8-5
