My "twin", Ang referred me to CiTR. I am so thankful! I'm hooked! I'm amazed by the dedication, creativity, generosity, and knowledge you all possess! You all give me courage and inspiration to do more (learn to knit?).
I love the recipes and the sense of "belonging."
I know what you mean; being here is like the phrase, "They took me under their wings"! I feel so welcome here…all of the hens and the rooster (so far as I know Pete is the sole Rooster, right?) have been so welcoming! And Suzanne, well what can I say: I was locked out for two days and had to re-register with her help….Thanks Suzanne!

I can't remember how I got here, I have been following since Suzanne lived in the 'slanted house'. When I first started I didn't even know what a blog was!! I think back then there were about 60 members. We have come a long way, baby!!!! And I just adore Suzanne!!!

i search for a recipe…and it brought me to Suzanne's blog. I don't even think the forum existed at the time…but I spent hours and hours reading all about the slant little house. I was from WV and it felt like home. It still does but my how the family has grown!

I think that I was looking for some cheese recipes that I printed out a long time ago, but didn't mark where I got them from. I did find some of them at a different site, but I also found that suzanne did fresh mozzarella just like I have been doing for the past year and a half. Oh, no…it was about bread…I was looking for that secret to bake whole grain breads like "they" used to do, and make mine better. These things got me interested in what else she might be into.
I bookmarked it to look at more later and when I did, I too was hooked. I love homesteading talk, as we are really big into trying to rediscover and learn these lost or almost lost skills. I want to pass on the knowledge to our children too.
I guess I come by it honestly. My grandpa took his small family by horse-drawn wagon to the place that he chose to settle. He handpicked the land, found suitable trees for cutting and building both his houses with, built his own log barn and I believe his second barn, trapped, kept livestock, tapped maple trees, farmed and hunted to feed his family as well as kept a large garden. He was a fantastic gardener, and my grandma was a very hospitable and fantastic cook. He made all kinds of things since they couldn't afford to buy the items. He was very creative. They raised a large family out in the bush, and made a lot of good friends as they moved into the area. I am proud of my heritage, and would like to learn some of the skills that they must have had to possess to make it through all those years. That is why I am here and why I have such a passion to learn these things.

LK, isn't it amazing how many things people knew how to do but we have totally forgotten! The store is just so easy. But it's so satisfying to do for yourself and know you can. Even if you don't HAVE to!
