I'm so excited!
We found this really cute little cottage on top of a mountain just outside my favorite north Georgia mountain town. We 're set to close on the 11th of December and I can hardly sleep!
However….the folks who owned it before were from Florida and it looks more like a florida house than a mountain house….pink walls and carpet!
This house has a huge porch that looks out over the world! I want to give it a look of rustic cottage simplicity. One of the first things we're doing is changing out the 'unvented gas logs' for a wood burning rock fireplace. Next, will go down 12 inch wide southern yellow pine floors.
Can yall offer some ideas for the walls which are pink dry wall….or the kitchen floor, or bedrooms or the awesome porch? I'm not much of a decorator but I do have tons of antiques and quilts.
I'm all ears!!!!

Oh, I'm giddy just thinking of it!!! Can you post some pics?
Is this a new home? was it new for the old owners?
Have you looked under the carpeting, and what's in the kitchen? If it wasn't new for them, there may be some great flooring under what's there!
Out with the pink, in with something neutral………..then you can bring the outdoors in, woodsy things. All of the woodwork natural…….
I would put a couple rockers on that front porch.

I'm with Cindy, keep the walls neutral. Especially if you plan to decorate with quilts. That way the quilts are what the eye is drawn to, not the walls. As for the floors, and you looking for carpet or hard flooring? I'd look at some flooring options and decide what kind of feel you want for the house. I think if it were me, I would want to go with hard flooring of some kind and then use some sort of rustic throw rugs throughout.
On the poorch I think rocking chairs or even a poorch swing or bench would be nice. You could also get an old fashioned milk can and set a potted plant on top of it. Does the poorch have a rail that you could put flower boxes or hanging baskets off?
Whatever you do, I'm sure it's going to be great. Congratulations!

Do we have an CiR Emergency Response Team? (Hmmm. Look at that acronym.) Looks like it may need to head your way. Just to consult, of course.

Oh my pink walls and carpet?
I promise you……I don't know of any people here in my part of Florida that would have pink walls and carpet! Imagine that!
I agree, keep the walls neutral. Of course, I have quilts all over and my walls are painted bronzed copper and caramel apple. My daughter's bedroom/bath and guest room are aqua blue…she loves blue.
I too would love to see pics of your cabin…I love the idea of a cabin on a mountain!

There is a whole discussion section about posting pics here: http://suzannemcminn.com/forum…..read-here/
I finally had to print off some of the instructions, then work my way down the page! It really wasn't that difficut to do, but it involved some steps with which I was completely unfamiliar. Trust me – if I can do it, anyone can!

Ohhhh Miss Dana, it's just a couple of hours from me. I agree with everyone, neutral walls and wood floors. Let your quilts and antiques shout!! Make the porch a room in itself, rockers, swing and of course tables to sit your snacks and drinks on, when you relax. Congrats, it sounds like so much fun!!

Okay…here's my first try with the pictures. I'll do one of the porch, a couple outside and also inside. You can get a feel of the size of the living room. Also, I forgot to tell you one of the funnest things about this cottage! It has its own guest house! Just a little one room mini cottage, just as cute as can be. Just big enough for a double bed and chest of drawers. I'm going to do wood floors in there too and I was thinking maybe even the beadboard ceiling panels. I want it too cute!
(Okay, here goes. I'm copying the image code from photobucket..that may not be right?)

  Yippee!! It worked!!!
There's two bedrooms and two bathrooms and then the other bedroom in the little house. What were those folks thinking, haha! Pink walls and carpet in the mountains! I can't wait!!

OMG I love it!!!
I totally love that porch. I love a big porch with a swing! My porch is huge, we need to screen it in so I can really enjoy sitting on it at night. But I don't have a swing on it! I don't know what reason there was when we were having our house built that I didn't get one put up…but I need to remedy that problem this spring!
You have a gorgeous view.

Hey, Deb – just a suggestion, since you do not have a swing yet – consider a glider instead. They can be moved around. I've put up several porch swings, and haven't managed to get one in the right spot yet! Always end up wishing it were over there somewhere, or wanting the spot it is in for something else for a while. Or something.
There's just something about a swing on a porch, though. Guess I'm going to keep trying!

A glider swing is a great idea!
I didn't think about those….and your right. It would be good to be able to move that swing around especially when the sun is shining right in your eye. I see those glider swings for sale all over town!
Thanks Pete!!

Meanwhile, back to Miss Dana!
Great job on moving the pics! They are terrific.
On the little extra bedroom – perhaps it was originally intended to be a play house or a tool shed, or something like that? What a great conversation piece to have. It can stay a bedroom, or become a crafting room/quilt studio. Some place to go to get away from things, even in the rain!

What a beautiful place! I love that porch, it reminds me of my front porch. There is just about nothing more wonderful than a big covered porch!

Wow that is so cool. I know you are going to enjoy that home. I have a screen porch…I call it the sun porch but it doesn't have any glass. I decorated it with odds and ends that I had, I bought the end tables and coffee tables made of barn wood and the rest came from Goodwill (lamps for instance) and a rug from Big Lots…I love showing off my porch and everyone comments on how cool it is. The furniture is all just
stuff that I already had so it cost next to nothing to put together….Now I realize that you might not like this style but I was just using this as and example of how to put together a casual porch. You can't see it in the picture but there is a wroght iron, glass top table behind the chair on the right. We love our porch so much and we use it just about every day.

Sleeping cabins are quite common here … a friend of mine on one of the islands just built herself a little (tiny) cabin (18 X 20) and will also build a sleeping cabin for company. Friends on the west coast have a beautiful cottage on the water and have a sleeping cabin, just room for a single bed, a wood stove and a little desk. They love them

I also meant to add a few things about your decorating. Are you going to hang the quilts on the walls?? In that case I would keep most things around it quite neutral and plain … so that the quilts are show-cased. I would love to get my hands on a really lovely wall quilt … still looking for "the one"
I also agree with pulling up the floor coverings and seeing what is underneath them … is the pine flooring going down on all the floors?? I think that provides a nice continuity in a smaller home. With the exception of the bathrooms and entry ways where water can be an issue.
Do you need window coverings??? I live in a rural area and love that I only need window coverings in the front bedroom and the living room … I hang things in the other windows, sun catchers, friendship balls and at Christmas I hang decorations off ribbons.

Your cabin is adorable. As far as decorating goes, intensely-colored walls can be very effective if done right…it all depends upon the mood you want to create. Sometimes, people will paint just one wall an intense or different color to highlight a special item, like a quilt. For instance, if your couch is a medium blue, you could paint 3 walls cream or ecru and then paint one wall the same blue and hang a quilt that has, for instance, navy blue sections in it, or a light blue wall with a navy blue quilt. Or paint the wall that will hold a blue quilt a golden yellow to highlight a blue quilt and build your color scheme around blue and gold. Just some thoughts. But most people play it safe and use neutral colors.
