This is a great post and handy right now 'cuz after christmas, I have two kids with January b'days. HRH has work but it's a slow time all round.
I just would add a couple things
1. Use your local library. It's a great winter activity, gets you out of the house one evening a week, and its free.
2. This really paid off this winter. Robyn (11) needed new winter boots, I waited thinking I could get a pair on sale if I waited til December……….wrong…………If there were any boots they were still $40-$60, and I know shel'll grow out of them by this spring. So I put a call out to a couple friends with older girls, they didn't have any but my one friend phoned me back in 10 minutes and had found a pair from a friend of hers. Good boots too. When you have 4 kids to shoe $40 each is too much.
3. My home has sort of become the depot for 'grown out of clothing' (I guess 'cuz I have so many kids at so many different ages) Tons of my friends bring me bags of clothes their kids have out grown, I pick what I need and pass on what I don't. This year I didn't have to buy a single winter coat, and only the youngest got brand new boots.
When my kids do need something clothing wise or even gift wise this is my routine: Ask around see if anyone has one, check Goodwill, Value Village, second hand/consignment shops, Price compare at a couple different spots, then buy.
Missy, you've inspired me about the hair cuts, Bobby had a hair cut in Sept, and another one Jan. 1, I have two boys and 2 haircuts every 3 months will add up. I think I'll talk to HRH to take the clippers to them instead, and maybe one professsional haircut each for school or Christmas or something.
thanks
anni
One more thing. If there is any possible way, cut back to one car. I still miss my little Integra alot (boohoo I loved that car) but two cars is double gas, double insurance, double parking (here in the city) and now I'm actually really happy I don't have it because I walk everywhere, almost everyday I walk somewhere I would have driven. It's a little easier for me maybe 'cuz HRH has a really flexible hours and can stay home if I need to go to an appointment, or he can come home early if I need him to so I can use the car. But lots of times I get a friend or neighbour to drive me somewhere, and it gives us a chance for a visit, We call it coming for coffee, but on the road.lol

Re: Clothes. You only need nine outfits. I like new ones, but get them on sale. Get things you can mix and match and layer. When the season changes go thru everything and see what you really need before shopping. This also allows you more space. Take clothes you can't or do'nt wear to a consignment shop to sell or have a rummage sale.
Re Health Ins: If you wk and can get health ins and dental ins do it! My health ins is worth it just for the lower price I get my prescriptions for. Not to mention all the money I save by only having to make a copayment visiting doctors. Also you never know when you will get an abcessed tooth need it pulled or a root canal or something. If my doctor orders me a new prescription I always ask if he has any samples, a lot of times they do..voila free sinus pills, anitbiotics etc. Plus, If you need hospitialized you save a great deal of money with ins. Also, ask at the hospital about charity funds or financial aid a lot of times they will cover or help cover out of pocket expenses according to your income.
Re Auto Ins: Shop around for the best prices. I use American Family Ins. To lower my mo pymts, I decided to up my deductible….If you wreck your car they have to give you the blue book value for it and will just subtract the deductible from your check for your new car!
Pay your bills on time to avoid late fees and or reconnection fees.
Follow the speed limits by at least 3-5 miles an hr…never know when the cops are watching and waiting! IF you do get pulled over driving, be nice and say as little as possible. I've gotten off with just a warning many times over the yrs that way. Traffic tickets are expensive.
Do'nt use credit cards. Save up and pay cash for it or do'nt buy it.
Re:Grocery shopping shop places you know have the better prices. Take a list with you and stick to it. If it makes you feel better…buy a candybar on the way out! Ha ha!
Well, I'll stop here cuz I'm not really writing a book!

Oh thought of one more thing for mom's with kids….If you want to occ treat them to a movie, go to a matinee (cheaper tickets). Carry your "movie purse" ( a large bag stuffed with cold drinks, Candy, and snacks from the dollar store)! Walk right past the concession stand. When seated wait for the lights to go out and the previews to start to pop open the coke cans all the while watching for the occ teenage usher with the bright flashlite, Ha, Ha!

I caution here with kids. I took drinks and such into the theatre with me only once. My son was so embarrassed and afraid I would get caught – it was not worth it to me. I think their self -esteem is fragile at many ages growing up and I would be careful about some of this with kids. Kids can carry this stigma with them into adulthood. Raising 4 kids is a lot of money I am sure. Maybe it is how you portray your situation to them. I only used hand me down clothes with my son when he was little and only a few items after that. Kids go to school with these clothes on that belong to someone there perhaps and I would just be careful about how it is presented to them. Kids can be cruel to other kids. I grew up with kids who never had much new and always used and I can tell you it affected their self esteem.
doing hair cuts at home, sewing clothes, shopping sales, used stores are all great ideas, i just am concerned about their self esteem and the older they get the more it is so for them with their peers. Not that you have to buy everything at the most expensive stores. I grew up where we had new clothes only at CHristmas and Birthday and beginning of school. My mother put them in lay-a-way(remeber that term?) so we did not have a lot, but I remember jr. high and high school too. the older you get who cares – i buy clothes at the thrift store all the time. our church buys new coats for kids in our area who would not get them, we bought 335 this yr.

I agree about the movies thing, I did that with my daughter and she was really anxious about being caught, and I decided that the few dollars I saved wasn't worth it, Costco sells movie deals so if you buy that (on a friends membership) it will save a few dollars, mostly though we don't go, but sometimes the kids go if they get some money as a gift, or a movie pass.
The other tip I forgot is menu planning. I think this was the biggest budgetsaver I have done in a long time, and stress reliever too. Me and a couple girl friends get together at the end of each month and menu plan for the month. Then I do Breakfast and lunch on a seekly basis.
About the used clothes. I'm lucky that most of my kids peers also are members of the 'great clothing exchange' that goes on in this neighbourhood, even if they can afford new.
Also inspired by this post I'm digging out my drying rack, I just put my last load in the dryer !that's it my using my rack
thanks ladies.

When my sister was in high school my mom always insisted on waiting to buy "qualtiy" clothes on sale. My sister hated it. She would rather go to the thrift store and get five creative outfits for the same money. That way she could change with the styles, and not worry about donating the clothes back to the thrift store when she was done with them. By that time she wasn't likely to outgrow clothes, but she never wore them enough to actually wear them out. With my mom's "good" clothes you had to wear them forever to justify the cost. That made her stick out like a sore thumb faster than wearing used clothes, but more clothes.

Holy crap Batman! We could afford the latest and greatest shoes, clothes and accessories for our children – HOWEVER – I didn't feel it was in their best interest to provide it for them. They learned to wear hand me downs – and it has not hurt their self esteem one bit! I have great kids – smart, intelligent and out-going – they aren't afraid to try anything.
I've found it's more important to expose them to different people, different cultures, and different ideas – than to conform to the idea that they have to have what's IN. We spent our money on doing things as a family. As long as the kids looked neat and clean – it didn't matter – to them or to their friends.
I've found that if you feel ashamed of things – your kids will too.
That's just my opinion – my kids are my proof – it does NOT hurt kids to wear hand me downs. I grew up with kids that didn't have much new either – and it didn't hurt them – and it didn't hurt me.
I could do much more damage to their self esteem with a pair of scissors! Heaven help anyone that I'd give a haircut to.

If Jonathan didnt wear hand-me-downs to school, he would have been ridiculed more for being naked! But most of what he wore was originally from walmart and just like everyone else wore anyway.
My coworkers daughters would not go to school unless their jeans cost x amount of dollars and had someones name stamped on the butt. They had to have the best of everything, all the things mom never had as a child. So mom and dad worked 2 jobs, to give them the "best". They were spoiled brats and bullies, because no one was good enough or pretty enough for them to play with.
Being a single parent was not my plan. There were times I rolled off toilet paper from the gas station on the corner into my purse. After 7pm at that same gas station, the hotdogs were half price. And when the attendant realized we ate a lot of hotdogs (he was very insightful) he gave us a lot of extras, saying he was just about to throw them all away. I also would buy a gallon of whole milk and divide it into 4 half gallon jugs and fill with water and freeze it. We ate a lot of 10cent can bisquits.
We also went to a dollar theater every 2 weeks as our treat. And we always took our own popcorn, not microwave, and koolaid in his school thermos. It was an adventure and a fun time just like the hotdogs at a roadside park.
So I with all my heart believe that it is not what you provide for them, but how you teach them to accept what you provide for them. And that we teach them tolerance and love and acceptance for others. And not only how to treat others, but how to teach people to treat them also.
My sons girlfriend had a baby yesterday (not his baby, they have only dated for about 4 months) and he was concerned about her last night. We had a long talk and one thing he said will always be with me. "Mom, you were a single mom, and we had a great life, and you did a great job". So I dont think it hurt him much.
I now step down from my box.

I read once that a good mother gives each child exactly what they need. That said, I raised three boys mostly on one income, my husband's, since we thought it best I be a stay at home mom. During this time he was in the Navy, and I can tell you like teachers, firemen, and policemen, we don't pay our military enough.
Each of my children had different needs when it came to clothes. They wore hand me downs alot of the time. My oldest, because he was the oldest of three boys, got new quality clothes, alot. I didn't shop at the mall, but what I bought lasted. Except for jeans, boys just tend to wear jeans out.
They wanted mall clothes, oh how they wanted mall clothes. But they also wanted scouts, sports, music and family vacations. So they knew wearing hand me downs was a compromise.
My oldest, once he started high school wanted to be GQ. At the time we let him get a few things at the mall. Once he started working he found he could look just as GQ without the name brand, by shopping at the thrift stores and at WM. It became a challenge to his group of friends to outdo each other with their thrift store finds. They were all great kids, athletes, top of the class academically, community involved kids.
From the beginning we taught our kids that your clothes are not what defines you. Your actions, how you treat others and how you contribute to your world should be what people see. If they are looking at you because of how you are dressed or where you live, they are looking at the wrong thing.
Now for my money saving tip!
I shop the day old bread store! I wish I had time to bake delicious Grandmother Bread, but I don't so, I shop the bread store for breads, rolls and desserts at half the price! I'm so excited because they are moving the bread store so that now it is on my direct route home from work. So now I'll save on gas and bread!!!!

A doctor here at the hosp told me that in order to restart my metabolism, I should be eating every 2 hours instead of the normal 3 meals a day. He suggested I buy those new boxes of 100 calories snacks they have out now and have one of those every 2 hours. Have you seen what they charge for those things! So I scoured the snack isles and bought boxes of low cal and low fat snacks and a 100 ct box of snack bags, and MADE MY OWN! For 1/4th the price. I got wheat thins, baked cheetoes, caramel rice cakes, cheese rice cakes, cheese nips, and a couple others. I have a HUGE box of snacks to choose from now. Every morning to pack for work, I grab 6 assorted bags and am out the door. I also vary it with fruit and carrots and celery done the same way. And I just found out I am allergic to bananas and strawberries!

To keep myself from overindulging, I do the same. I keep my pantry filled with "snacks" I've made myself. I used to do this for my kids – buy in bulk and then break it down – and I've never lost the habit.
I buy sock dividers – and keep those in my cheese drawer with different cut up cheeses I've bagged. I keep cut up celery and carrots – but I just love munching on raw cauliflower and cabbage too. I find that if I wash the produce as soon as it comes home, it gets eaten or used. If I just stick it in the "rotter" – it just rots!

Almost every package of meat in my freezer has a half-price sticker on it. (Or if not half price then at least 30% off.) I look for extra discounts at the meat counter every time I shop. I watch the ads, and see what the specials are for the week, then I shop the day after the ad goes off. The stores tend to stock up on sale items, and sometimes they don't sell as much as they thought they would. The day after the sale ends, the rest of yesterday's ad specials become your discount meat for the freezer. The meat has a shorter "sell by" date, but if it's going into the freezer, or into the pot for tonight's dinner it really doesn't matter, does it.
I would do the same thing with the produce department. The Ralph's market (Kroger's here on the east coast) would get their big shipment of fresh produce on Tuesday. Early Tuesday morning the produce manager would go through the bins and cull the produce that, while still good, wasn't good enough to put out with the new shipment. He would fill a large plastic bag with a mix of produce – you might find a bag with 6 potatoes, 2 onions, an orange, and 10 apples. Whatever came up went into the next bag – without sorting. Each bag sold for $1, no matter what it contained. I would fill a shopping cart full and take it home and wash, peel, chop and store the produce and then make a game of designing a menu to use what I found. My biggest find was three huge bags of mushrooms for a total of $3 – when mushrooms were selling for $2.75 per pound. I got 11 pounds of mushrooms, and after sorting through them only a handful were really no good. The rest were comparable to the full-price mushrooms in the bins. See if your store does the same thing, and get to know the produce manager and ask when they get a shipment, and what they do with the slightly wilted produce. Then make sure you get first pick.

When I know I want bananas for banana bread and not to just eat, I always ask the produce people for the "rotten" ones in the back. They always bring out a nice size bag full for 25 cents. Some of them are still edible as regular bananas. Once she wanted to sell me a case of them for a dollar! I didn't have room in my freezer or I would have!

That's the only way I like bananas…I have friends that will only eat them GREEN – the greener, the better. So I guess we're on opposite ends of the monkey meter…

At the commissary, most of our bananas are green when we get them. That's why I always ask for the "rotten" ones. They get rid of the good edible ones.

So I save money by………..

keeping my tires on my car filled, changing my air filter regularly and driving the speed limit. Okay the last one not so much, but I try!

If you have enough allergies you can save a bunch of money not buying stuff you are allergic to. If it gets bad enough, you can just stay in a bubble and not have to go anywhere or spend any money on anything but plastic wrap…
