We were putting in an aviary at the ranch to raise quail and pheasants but now we are going to build a chicken house as well. Going to get a few rabbits and goats. Not sure about a cow for beef yet.
Planning my garden for better production and variety this year.
Trying to use more of my food in the freezer. I am not a good food manager at all. Any tips on how to be better about this?
I'm a list maker, and with a chest freezer, an extra refrigerator (no freezer) both in the root cellar and the double-door in the kitchen I have a ton of things stored. I make a list of what's going in, and try to remember to update it when I take things out, but of course the lists gets out of date when I don't keep it up with every in and out. Every few months I just make a new inventory, find the hidden gems that disappeared into the bottom of the chest, and cook something new for dinner.
I guess I just need to unload the chest freezer and do that. I threw out a package of ground meat and pork chops just the other day that were too badly freezer burnt to cook. Made me sad.

I love my Food Saver…I buy in bulk and have trained my husband to re-package the meat into portion sizes…that machine takes the air right out of it…and no freezer burn.
My grandma used a straw…

Bee, my MIL and SIL use those…we repackage our meat into serving sizes too. We get large pkg.'s and them divide them into freezer bags.

Well, I hate to admit it but I guess laziness took over. I have a food saver and do use it a lot to repackage meat but evidently did not feel like it when I stuck these packages in the freezer.
I still purchase groceries like all 4 of my kids are still at home.

Jayne – good idea about the soap outside. Another thing I do is save my bread sacks. I empty the ice maker in them and keep ice all the time so I dont have to go buy it. I got ladies at the church to do the same thing so we did not go buy ice.

Lots of great ideas here! Here's how we save money:
We turn the heat off at night and use the wood stove whenever possible for all heat. We just wear more clothes. We will occasionally add a small heater in the bathroom when taking a shower. We have an oil furnace but try not to use it. We gather all the free wood we can all year, logs, boards from construction sites, etc. etc. and burn them all winter for heat. It save us a LOT on the heating bill. We have only one small air conditioner in the bedroom window and use that only when necessary and only at night.
ALL clothing, other than underwear, is second hand. I love garage sales! ALL furniture items are also second hand. Just about everything we own is bought second hand. I just can't pay store prices for things anymore, after decades of garage sales.
I color my own hair. I cut hubby's hair and the dog's hair. I don't cut son's hair as he's very picky. (he's 23).
No long distance phone calls! Everything is email.
We have a huge clothesline and everything goes on it unless it's sub zero temps, then I use the dryer for some things and hang others on a rack in the house.
I make everything I possibly can myself. I'm a real DIYer.
I can't remember the last time we ate out, would probably have been a few months ago. We eat at Wendy's, maybe 4-5 times/yr and that's all the eating meals out that we do. If we are on an outing of some kind, we take food with us. Now, some of that is more due to my inability to eat wheat than trying to save money, but it is a great money saver, as well.
We eat leftovers all week long. We cook a lot on the weekends and just eat off of it all week. We take our own lunches to work every day. Everyone at my house works full time all day, no one has time to “make dinner”. We just each do for ourselves when we get home.
We grow a lot of our own veggies and freeze them. We eat a lot of eggs, since we have our own.

Runningtrails – I think you are my new idol. We do a lot of the same things you do, and not enough of some of the others. The things I do, like cooking in one great batch and living on leftovers, are done because I like to do them, not necessarily out of much thought of saving. I do watch sales, and purchase nothing unless it's on sale, or it I'm totally out I might buy one of something – then wait for the sale and stock up.
I'm actually designing a budget for 2009. That should be a no-brainer for a CPA (me) but it's really the first time I've had to think before I bought something I need. Instead of spending my retirement — it's time to save and make it grow. I may live longer than I planned with all the good things I've found since my move to WV.

I've been using the internet alot for finding "ingredient" recipes…….
I don't keep sweetened condensed milk on hand, but having the time to bake, alot of things are calling for it…….you can make sweetened condensed milk out of pwd milk, sugar, butter and water
I make my own hot cocoa powder and one of the ingredients is Nestle Quick Powder…..WAY TOO EXPENSIVE! cocoa pwd and sugar in a blender makes this powder
I keep a file on the computer of just these ingredient recipes and when I come across a recipe that calls for something I don't have, I just do a search and most everything is made out of things that are in the pantry. I only have to keep on hand normal everyday things!

Oh, Cindy! What a lovely idea! Perhaps one day we can have a section over in recipes for just those things! An "Instead Of" group.

That sounds like a brilliant idea! It's not a recipe, but it could be a topic like a recipe to collect ideas from everyone. We'll work on that one and set up a format.

You can make your own brown sugar out of regular sugar with molasses mixed in. The more molasses the darker the brown sugar.

Bee pointed out that there is already a thread on the 'Farmhouse Table' forum about the subject. I've been thinking about it, and I still think the most appropriate place for the subject would be with the recipes on the 'Just Recipes' forum.
Here's my reasoning: If I chose a recipe and found I was missing an ingredient, I could look for a substitute in the 'Just Recipes' forum. It wouldn't occur to me to look elsewhere, or that the topic had already been addressed, unless I'd seen and remembered the topic. I didn't remember the topic was there, and I've been combing through the forum topics and reading every new one all along. I don't know how a new member would find the substitution topic unless they were looking for it.
Instead the topic could be added to the recipe index, and pinned at the top of the forum. That's my thought on the subject. Does it sound more useful to have the subsitutions topic done that way?

This is more what I was thinking Kathy……I've found the "Just Recipes" to be much easier now, (especially for all the new members to the forum who haven't been reading right along) If I was looking for a recipe, I would go to the recipe section…………..

Just found a website that has at least a bazillion ways to save money on everything from food to clothes to storage techniques, to you name it!
http://www.frugalvillage.net/
Have been reading Sara Noel's column for several years and she has some great ideas. A little something for everyone, mostly city dwellers, but many other ideas which are transferable to the rest of us.
