Because of all the problems lately in Kenya I was wondering if anyone has heard from Mama Joseph. I hope she is far enough from Nairobi that she and her family are safe.

Mama Joseph posted earlier today, which I admit I was glad to see!  She's in Samburu, Kenya, which is around 200 miles from Nairobi, more or less depending on exactly where she's at of course.  200 miles may not sound that far to us, but from what she's said about the distance time wise due to bad roads and other problems traveling, it's much further than what we are used to thinking.

I haven't specifically contacted her about it, in part because just having her post is reassuring, and I kinda thought she's getting a lot of that sort of message from the rest of her family!  help  I'm hoping she'll post a bit on the topic a bit later.   ((hint hint MamaJ!))

I, too, had wondered about her but seeing her posted let me know that all was well.  Glad that she and her family are safe.

Nairobi news: Ya'll are the best. You're correct, we're very far away from the city and things here are as if it didn't happen at all. The attack did occur at a mall which we always visit while in the City. We go there for grocery shopping, restaurants, movies and/or a cup of coffee. It's a great place to meet up with friends. We have several friends/colleagues who live within a 5 minute walk of the mall. One of our families was caught up in the siege with their 5 children. Dad and teenage son were in one place, while mom and smaller kids hid in another location. They were some of the luckiest as none of them were harmed and they all managed to get out on Day 1. Some were trapped, hiding for 4 days. Many, of course, did not make it out alive. So sad.

The biggest effect for us personally is merely that a team of volunteers who were scheduled to arrive in a couple of weeks may feel the need to cancel or postpone their trip. We hope they come, but understand if they don't. Either way, we are taking a few days off the end of October and going on a short safari at a wonderful tented safari camp. Then to the city for regular shopping.

Thank you all for asking. We are okay!

I (sorta) have a farm in Africa.

bonita, was it requiring you to log in on the blog while you were already logged in on the forum?

yes, but I'm used to that. . . opened browser went to CITR forum, site recognized me as logged in (not just 'hello bonita) but ready to post reply. Moved to blog and system requested log in to leave comment—that's when things fell apart. Ghost in the machine?

Help. I've been trying to edit my profile for several days now and can't. When I click on edit profile it takes me back to the main page.

I roasted pumpkin seeds for the first time last night!   They turned out good but would have liked them a little crunchier.  I boiled the seeds in salt water for 10 minutes then drained and patted dry. Then baked them on a cookie sheet in olive oil and sea salt. I baked them for about 35 minutes but checked/stirred them around every 5-10 minutes.

Any other recipes for them would be greatly appreciated.

Recently I have been watching a tv series called Mountain Monsters staring 5 brave men from West Virginia that go out to find all sorts of nasty creatures that have long plagued various states. I am just fascinated with these guys, they seem to be fearless as well as funny at times---anyone else a fan?

happy-flower

Super lazy day for us, lawn and garden work caught up, house work done, mostly.

I have been wanting a square biscuit cutter. I looked on line and everything I found was either part of a set, or too expensive for my taste, I am much to frugal to spend a lot of money on a biscuit cutter. I have a large collection  of old cookie cutters so I went through them, no square cutters but there were two diamond shaped cutters, I took one of them and reshaped it into a square---mission accomplished-- I have my square cutter -for FREE. I used it this moring when I made biscuits and it worked perfectly.

Very clever, Joell! "Repurposing" is the way to go nowadays, everything is so expensive, and often cheaply made to boot.

I recently purchased some new sheets and found that they now come in cloth sacks.  I was wondering if anyone has found use for them.  They aren't quite big enough to put shoes in when packing for a trip.  A couple of them have elastic and one is drawstring tie.  When we travel I use plastic bags to hold my shampoo, body wash, etc. that way if they spill it is contained.  I hate to throw the sacks away.
