Oh.  Is it required to actually MAKE something with the fabric?  I thought it was all about the contest to have the largest stash.  We're talking tonnage among my quilting friends!

Personally, I only make wall hangings and wearables.  One project (which may or may not ever be finished) is from 30's reproduction fabrics alternating hand appliqued fans and blocks of manufactured fabric with skinny red setting strips, piano keys for a border and yet to be determined corners.  It measures out about 110 x 120.  So far.  Since I don't make bed quilts, we call this one a king-sized wall hanging…

With a wall hanging that large you don't have to paint the walls in the room!

Pete, thats a king size quilt! Are we talking inches here? You must have one huge frame! Moms hangs from the ceiling and can hold 115x115 inches. She considers anything less than a queen a waste of her time. She does do a lot a baby quilts 44x44, but she says it must be usable.

Well see, that's where I understand your fabricolism too.  My husband thinks I have enough paper and I need to make stuff with what I have.  But the paper is too pretty to cut!!!!

But, Georgia, I don't make bed quilts, so it remains a king-sized wall hanging!  Can't wait until some quilt show somewhere rejects it.  Hah!  That won't happen, because they always let the maker decide what category to enter it into.  The folks hanging the show will have some VERY unkind words, I am more than sure!  But it started out as a wall hanging and so it remains.

Yes, inches, as opposed to what, feet perhaps??  Cool  It got bigger than I expected it to be.  But, I never know what size they will be until they are finished…

Oh, and I only machine quilt.  My quilts are all kind of quirky.  Start out with some fairly traditional design, then they get skewed somehow.  If I ever get any more done and/or get any entered anywhere I'll let you know.

Georgia, you must feel like a miser when you sit in your new room with all of the fabric.  Just touching and running your fingers through it all.  I understand.  I don't ever need any,but I gotta have it.  You just never know when an inspiration hits you and you just have to act on it.  Myself….I buy, I fold so that I can see it.  Sometimes, I will just look up and say wow….thats a quilt.  I didn't see it before but there it was. lol  Anyway, that is my justification.  I collect fabric to induce creativity.  My hubby wouldn't want to stifle that. hahahha

Anni, my buisiness only feeds my addiction… I will never be cured….AND neither will you….lol…but you are in good company!

Not so much a “great find” as it is a tip on how to GET a great find, particularly pretaining to art.

This is for all of us who've ever wandered into an art gallery, and then wandered right back over 2 minutes later because you can't see the work over the astronomical price tag on it.

First off, don't panic when you go in, and keep in mind that it's common practice for art galleries to charge anywhere from 50-75% mark up. So if you go to a gallery, and see something you like, but can't afford gallery prices (trust me I can't either)… then try these things.

Ask the gallery curator for the artist's business card (which usually has contact info), or be slick and write their name down…on your hand. Also ask where the artist is from or currently working out of.  Then put the info and the wonderfulness of the internet to work for you.

Google their name, see what you can find. If they do not have a personal webpage, like Ron Meyers didn't when I was looking for his work, then you have to get a little crafty. Remember asking where they were from?

Well there is a wonderful site called http://www.whitepages.com that lets you search for practically anyone out there that's listed. It will give you names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. See what you can find! Please note that I'm saying find all their personal information and CALL them or STALK them, I'm saying find their address and write them a letter.

You'd be surprised what a written letter will do for you.(Not that it will work every time, but it can't hurt to try!) In the instance that I was looking for work of Ron Meyers, I couldn't afford to pay 120-250 dollars per coffee cup or tea bowl. Ron's work is also in such high demand, he doesn't have any personal contact info listed on his cards either, just gallery information. So I whitepage'd him, found his address, and I wrote him a letter around August asking if I could commission him to make some coffe cups for me!

Upfront I asked what he would charge me per cup, and I told him that I would need them by Christmas. It took him like 2 weeks (I was beginning to think he wouldn't write back.) to write me back, but when he did I was surprised!  He told me that he would charge me $30.00 per cup, not $120-$250 per cup like the galleries I'd contacted were charging. It was a FRACTION of the cost, so I was able to order 6 of them (3 for me and 3 for Christmas presents), plus shipping it all came to $200.00.  Which I know, I know $200.00 isn't a drop in the hat either, but the great thing about Ron was that he didn't make me pay anything upfront. Granted I'd already saved up my $$, this just gave me extra time.

So there you have it, a story and some tips about buying art!

Ya know Kelleh, I'd never thought about doing that until I worked across from a group of artists at the fair and they told me the same thing!  That's a great tip.  I was floored at what they were charging, and what they'd actually take.

In these hard economic times, with everyone pinching pennies, I wanted to remind you about some where you may be able to get repairs made at a good price, your area Vocational/Technical school!

For example, I get my eyebrows waxed, hair cut and facials done in the Cosmetology department at our area vo tech.  My facial is $10 where in the real world it's upwards of $50!  Eyebrows, $3 instead of $8, and a haircut is $8 instead of $20 or more!   Coloring and perms are very cheap too, but I don't remember the prices right now.

Our vo tech charges just 20% over the cost of your parts to repair many items, cars, boats, small engines, welded items and all carpentry & electrical work.  They also to HVAC work.  (heat & air).

You'll have to check with your local vo tech to see what they offer, some even offer veternarian services, upholstery, and tractor repair.  Just a thought to help us save money on services most of us use every day!

You don't have to shy away from the services and repairs made by the students at the Vocational/Technical school in your area. They are getting to practice their skills on you, but their work is supervised and approved by their instructors. It's well worth it to check it out.

Thanks Kathy! I forgot to add that part! It's true!  They don't work on things they aren't ready for!

That is an excellent idea!  I don't know why I haven't thought of this.  My oldest is in vo-tech here.  I need to find out what services they offer!  I know they do butchering because they are always promoting that during deer season.

Well Ross just walked in the room and he told me they do car repairs out there for FREE, you just have to pay for the parts!  Wow.

Clover made me do it.

Suzanne, you definitely have an in if Ross attends school there.   Some schools require that you be an employee or student.  Ours doesn't for Cosmetology, but for most other things it does.  Good Luck!

I use to get my hair cut and stuff at a school in Abilene when I lived there for a mere fraction.  they always did a great job unlike some others I have had in the real world out there.  besides you are helping them to have a career and to do something good with their lives too.  Ilike that part of it too.

I forgot about the trade schools, I need a haircut, even been tempted to take scissors to it.  That would probably be a disaster, because of the old arthur, I can't hold my arms up very long.

Ack!  Don't go there!  (Cutting it yourself!)  Of course, this is from someone that isn't even allowed to trim the dogs ears…

I'm so lucky when it comes to hair……..my future DIL is my beautician, she's naturally artistic. She cuts my hair and will style it if I want for cheap! She also has colored it in the newfangled kind of way! She gave me a $120 color job that took 1 1/2 hrs with highlights for $20, plus I get her discount on beauty supplies, shampoo, etc! So sweet of her, I always give her a tip tho. Once in awhile she scoots me out of there for free, Ha, ha!

Life is too important to be taken too seriously.
